I would go one step further and say that this film is more traditional/commercial than the Bergman films. Thanks for the review Dom, it’s been a long time since I last saw this; will need to revisit.

I remember some in depth discussion on this, but maybe it got eaten in one of the purges. Anyway, to the question of where it fits in: this was Rossellini’s last commercial film and it flipped hard at the time despite, in my opinion, being an excellent example of commercial filmmaking. It has the most in common with Escape by Night as a sort of no frills genre flick that tightly adds in some themes. I think it’s one of his easiest to have a good time with.
