Could be wishful thinking on my part because he’s a personal hero but Schulz does seem to have been something of a movie buff, having also been friendly enough with fellow cartoonist Fellini to have exchanged drawings with him a few times. (And if you visit his old office at the museum in Santa Rosa, his book collection betrays his interest; here’s a photo I took of one of his shelves.)

Colonel! Criterion is selling new improved blu-ray versions of Kane before existing 4K buyers have received their defecto-disc replacements!

Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
Finally sat down to watch my UHD and my Panasonic 420 can’t play it! “This disc is not compatible for playback.” A google search shows I’m not alone in this. Anyone else have issues? I guess I need a replacement.
EDIT: Won’t play on my son’s PS5 either. Bummer. Email to Mulvaney sent.

I watched the The Complete "Citizen Kane" last night. It's the best doc I've seen on the film. It's great that CC was able to get a hold of it.

Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
Oh yeah. When I originally had the double DVD set from the '00s, I sold the crappy Battle Over Citizen Kane disc and replaced it with a DVD-R I made of the The Complete "Citizen Kane".FrauBlucher wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 9:42 amI watched the The Complete "Citizen Kane" last night. Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
Has anyone created a fan art cover for this so we could just put it in a regular 4 disc case?
I finally decided to order this and got it in the mail the other day.
The factory case for this is horseshit.

Looks like I’ll have to keep my DVD because of the “Battle Over Citizen Kane” bonus feature.

Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
Losing that doc probably helped Criterion in securing everyone for their new special features. IIRC Robert Carringer demanded to have his name removed from the doc and James Naremore (a consultant still listed in the credits) lambasted it when it came out. Jonathan Rosenbaum, Joseph McBride and the late Michael Wilmington all did the same - it has a pretty awful reputation among Welles scholars.

Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
Naremore talks about it in the new commentary and he clearly hates it.

People talking about Citizen Kane for an hour. It's the second time IOT/Bragg have taken up a topic in cinema. In December 2021 it was Lang, so we have a trend.

Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
Sorry for reviving the old discussion, but only during the last B&N sale I decided it would be safe to order BD of Citizen Cane and I would get the correct printing.
What I received was a package (not wrapped or otherwise sealed) with the slip case carrying a note: "First Printing 2021".
Is this the printing to keep or should I utilize a replacement procedure? Or maybe there is a way to figure all this out be examining the physical disc?
Thank you in advance for suggestions!

Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
Here’s some info from Criterion from a previous post in the thread:
How can I tell the new and old versions apart, once the new copies are out?
Everything except the UPC code is the same. When sealed, you will be able to tell the new product (with the corrected disc) from the old by the UPC code located on the back of the packaging. There will be a physical sticker on the outside of the plastic shrink wrap of all sealed copies of Citizen Kane with these new UPC code numbers.
CITIZEN KANE 4K UHD + Blu-ray combo:
UPC 715515270113 means the Blu-ray disc inside is good and does not need to be replaced
CITIZEN KANE Blu-ray:
UPC 715515270212 means the Blu-ray disc inside is good and does not need to be replaced
When the copy has been opened you can further confirm this by looking at the disc. The corrected Blu-ray disc 1 will have the words "SECOND PRESSING" on the outer edge of the disc, next to the "119 MINUTES."

Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
James Naremore and Jonathan Rosenbaum's commentary is great - one thing Naremore mentions that I missed (and I'm guessing is in the published script drafts) is that in the deleted brothel scene, Leland turns down an offer to be a client, which would have emphasized his prudishness and strengthens his anger and disillusionment with Kane's affair. One does wonder if that would have diminished the broader political disillusionment that comes across in that scene in the finished film, but it's interesting.
Also as Chris mentions, they do mention The Battle for Citizen Kane very briefly and indeed trash it, with Naremore discussing his involvement with it.

Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
Leafing through the Summer 1989 issue of Sight & Sound magazine, on p. 151 I came across a brief story told by Kane storyboard designer Maurice Zuberano. The original plan was to shoot a scene with a nurse onscreen as Kane whispers "Rosebud" (establishing that somebody heard Kane saying it), but it was never shot. Zuberano: "the missing shot /.../ was designed to give the picture credence".
P. 151 shows a storyboard for Kane´s deatbed scene. in November 1988, Zuberano sent the sketch to Pauline Kael (the letter is reproduced on p. 151). Kael forwarded it to Sight & Sound.

Re: 1104 Citizen Kane
The collection of clips from Merv Griffin and Dick Cavett interviews was fascinating. I have had the 4-disc set almost 3 years now and surprisingly haven’t gotten to the extras until now. The video from the Criterion laserdisc with Bogdonavich, Jaglom and others talking about Orson was fantastic to watch too.
The Battle over Citizen Kane was not as much a chore to watch, especially with the archival footage and interviews with those still alive then. The false equivalency it tries to make thematically between Welles and Hearst is unconvincing in its form here, but understanding the context of what Hearst did with his newspapers rings true to a lot of what we see today.
