Blu The Right Thing

Did Svet deduct a point off the overall score because of the extras or because of "violence"?

How does Svet give the extras 4 stars? That thing is fucking jam-packed with extras.

Based on his concluding paragraph, he was miffed that the extras didn’t share his finger-wagging negative reaction to the violence in the film. So he docked them a point.

That guy's "interpretation" of the film is so insensate as to beggar belief. But didn't Wim Wenders actually have a similar(ly stupid) beef when it premiered at Cannes?

Very predictable, down to linking to the former review to avoid writing a controversial or superficial one and the 3.5 "meh" score.
But it's at least funny to see the blu-ray.com's members taking jabs at him (until the posts are deleted of course) :
I see they got Svet ‘I, Daniel Blake is actually an argument against socialised welfare’ Atanasov to review a Spike Lee joint.
As for the extras, let's just remember this 4.0 score means he scored this package only 0.5pt higher than Bob le flambeur how contains an audio commentary by Nick Pinkerton, the French SC-produced 26 min doc, and some trailers.

This just continues an increased trend I've seen of people being somewhat befuddled by cinema that doesn't state overtly that a depiction of something is not necessarily a full-throated endorsement.

Lee claims Wenders didn’t like it because he didn’t find Lee’s character heroic. Here’s what Wenders said when asked about it
In fact, Wenders’ response to the drama is that it was a jury decision. “He said he’d be waiting for me in an alley with a baseball bat,” said Wenders. “Well, he should have been waiting for the whole jury because it wasn’t my decision. The film simply didn’t have the support of the jury…. He just had the bad luck to be in such a great year.”

He continues, “I had sleepless nights over our decision. With Spike, I’m still sad that he took it so personally.”
Based on everything Wenders has ever said and his own work, I find it hard to believe he disliked the movie or was unfair to its humanity. He simply was far more moved/impressed by sex, lies, and videotape, a film that benefited more from winning since Do the Right Thing didn’t need the push and Soderbergh’s win essentially paved the way for the massive influx of indie films in the 90s. It’s not like the Oscars where Lee has to contend with Driving Miss Daisy winning (which was worse than being snubbed for the nom in the first place), he lost to a film still also widely considered to be relevant and important in its own way.

Luckily that was the only time he was faced with the indignity of losing Best Picture to a far inferior film whose racial politics actively infuriated him

Not sure whether to laugh or cry there.

Re. Wenders, Lee's version of his Cannes loss always seemed a little dubious to me. Wenders is hardly above criticism, but it always seemed unlikely that he would have rejected Do the Right Thing because its protagonist failed to act in a conventionally heroic way. That said, as much as I like sex, lies, and videotape, I think even (or especially) Soderbergh would acknowledge that Do the Right Thing is the more powerful (and epochal) film, whatever the former's role in mainstreaming Sundance fare. But if we're second-guessing festival juries we could be here all week....

Arrived from B&N today and I spent the last several hours with it. The quality of this release in every regard (packaging, presentation, supplements) is simply astonishing.

Woof ! Only shipping method to France is DHL Express for a whopping $62.62, ending up for a total of $102.57 ! I guess I'll pass, then. That's really unfortunate, since that's usually the alternative for me in France to get stuff signed.

It looks like it has been re-stocked, though there's no indication on the page itself whether or not it will be signed I don't think there was before either?

As with tenia though, shipping to the UK would be $62 and an $100 total is too high for me.

When I looked at it yesterday, there was no indication of it being signed either.

Even the shipping to Canada is DHL Worldwide for $42. Just use USPS, Mr. Lee.

Spike Lee said on Instagram that he'll personalize a signature to you if you order the Blu-ray of Do the Right Thing from his website shop (note: it's priced at MSRP)

Yeah, sorry, I hadn't scrolled up. Lee's post was a few hours ago, I guess they were out of stock for a little while in-between. His company confirmed in the comments that all copies from that site will be signed.

Great edition of a great movie, and the new extras are up to snuff. It's wonderful to hear how such a fine film was also a fantastic, supportive experience for the people working on it. I don't know if Lee gets enough credit for actively bringing people into the industry, but Ruth E. Carter and Darnell Martin make it clear how hard he was pushing for diversity for the start, and how important his industriousness and savvy was in terms of providing continuity of employment, securing union cards and so forth.

I actually live within walking distance of 40 Acres, so it would feel ridiculous to pay $7.50 to have it shipped. He actually signed my copy of the old Criterion DVD so I'll probably get the BD unsigned during Criterion's flash sale.
