The Funeral Parade of Roses disc is terrific, definitely one of the releases of the year. The feature looks great and all those shorts make this a major archival release. Plus, there's a commentary by Chris D., for all you Border Radio fans!

Well, he was also in The Flesh Eaters and has written some casual books on Japanese genre cinema. Plus his time at the American Cinematheque was far more adventurous than anything they're doing today.

Got a reply today from Arbelos regarding the region code for their Autumn release of Hopper’s THE LAST MOVIE. They say it will be region A locked but that Carlotta will be releasing the same restoration in France and that other non-US countries may follow.

That's badass. I've wanted to see this for years and couldn't because I was threatend with physical violence (Not really) when I asked if the Facets release was any good.

Is it wrong I'm more excited by the Hopper announcement buried in the article?

The only footage I've seen related to The Last Movie is off the set and involves Dennis Hopper high off his ass on drugs in a bathtub. I've always been understood that The Last Movie is more of a curio piece than it is anything else. Could be wrong though. I certainly have no problem getting both that and Satantango.

The main problem with The Last Movie is that it was too ambitious of a concept for Hopper to pull off effectively, and his (probably) drug-influenced methods confounded the thing even more. Still, the bootleg version I saw a number of years ago was far from the worst film I've seen and I'd be interested in revisiting a properly-restored edition.

I saw a superb 35mm of The Last Movie a few months ago in NYC and it's just not a great film. Some gorgeous colors, though!

Will definitely check it out, but when will they announce the date for Satantango?!

I don’t think the restoration is complete yet, and I imagine Arbelos will give it some theatrical / festival play beforehand. I wouldn’t expect a Blu-Ray release before mid 2019.

Calvin appears to be right since the release has now been deleted from Amazon’s site. Only the VHS is showing up. The preorder link has also been removed on bluray.com. When Arbelos states “released fall 2018” perhaps they are only referring to the cinema prints.

The original article from January 2018 says that the new restoration would be coming to theaters "early next year" (i.e. winter/spring 2019) with Blu-ray release to follow, so they could still be on track for that.

Supposedly a UK label has picked up Private Property from Arbelos - could it be Indicator (who already have The Last Movie), or perhaps MoC (who might be looking to upgrade Funeral Parade of Roses)?

For UK distribution only, right?

Thanks. I've been planning to buy Private Property and didn't want to miss the Cinelicious edition -- I could just wait for the eventual MoC/Indicator release, however.

This was from the Arbelos insider on the Blu-ray.com forum after being asked for a Satantango update.
All I can say about Sátántangó is that the 4K scans are GORGEOUS.
This sounds oh so promising.

Chris D's commentary is mostly good, though he alternately refers to Peter as he and she. The choice of pronoun seems like the sort of thing he could have looked further into for the sake of respect.

As for The Last Movie, I'm not convinced it's good, but I'm glad it exists. How long had Alex Cox been working on the accompanying doc? It includes people who are now dead, such as Stewart Stern, who has been dead since 2015.

Quite a while. There’s an unfinished version Cox posted on Vimeo around 2012.
