AKA that movie I always forget was in the same MGM set as Pride of the Yankees, Man of the West, and the Westerner. Although, even good films would be overshadowed by that company...

Honestly I like it over The Pride of the Yankees and would vouch for it at least as fun.

Re: ClassicFlix
Question for anyone who has seen He Walked By Night: since imdb bills it as a semi-documentary drama, does it have the same tedious buzz kill narration that dates T-Men (an otherwise fine film)?

Re: ClassicFlix
Yes, but I remember the narration was much sparser than similar practices and was all gone in the breathtaking climax. Among those 40s semi-documentary procedurals, this is my favorite because of its taciturn and stark approach (along with The Naked City, which is talkative like hell, but full of intentional wit and irony).Finch wrote:Question for anyone who has seen He Walked By Night: since imdb bills it as a semi-documentary drama, does it have the same tedious buzz kill narration that dates T-Men (an otherwise fine film)?

Re: ClassicFlix
Thanks for that, sabbath. I'll go for it but once it's gone down in price. It's still close to £30 (low twenties I can justify for a single title) and a lot of ebay retailers still don't seem to stock it or at least not at £20-25.sabbath wrote:Yes, but I remember the narration was much sparser than similar practices and was all gone in the breathtaking climax. After I spent about $70 on these titles individually, ClassicFlix goes ahead and does this.
Goddamnit.

So is this the boxed set they were talking about? Because I'd love the extras, but the special editions of these films are fairly cost-prohibitive to Canadians, anywhere from $40-$50 CAD as imports.

I really hope they license these restorations to a UK label!

This fine Canadian just ordered T-Men for $29.77 CDN on wowhd.ca. He Walked By Night is $30.25 but Raw Deal is $46.26.jazzo wrote:So is this the boxed set they were talking about? Merrily We Live coming this summer-- I actually watched this recently and can give it a solid recommendation. There's some creaky bits, but the central conceit-- a rich family employs a hobo and endlessly exploits him without realizing the man is not a tramp at all-- is funnily used and while it's a clear attempt at tweaking My Man Godfrey's formula, well, it works!

Stand-In (1937) starring Leslie Howard, Blondell, and Bogart announced on Facebook
New to me, but I'm certainly interested in this one.

Re: ClassicFlix
I watched my copy of Stand In and it's def forgotten for a reason: it's completely unfunny. Only saving grace is Joan Blondell, adorable here as a former child star reduced to being the titular studio player. She gives her meager screentime her all, but inexplicably she all but vanishes from the last half of the film to focus on Leslie Howard's rote Academic Boob character. This movie is so dumb about Hollywood that it ends with the studio contractees occupying the studio so they can complete Bogart's film, one that everyone is sure will save the studio. What's the movie that inspires these drastic, career-killing acts of loyalty? A jungle B-Picture re-edited to remove its leading lady and instead star a monkey
Pro-tip for those who want to see this anyways: If you must watch this, do it with someone who will hide the remote from you during every grating second of Jack Carson's screentime

Finally, another Marx Brothers film. A Night in Casablanca on December 15. Don't know
what kind of quality. All it says is 'remastered.'

Classicflix has acquired, and is restoring, the 80 'Little Rascals' talkie shorts made between 1929 and 1937. An Indiegogo campaign for the project will be revealed soon.

I've never seen any sound era movies from Harry Langdon. Any thoughts on Zenobia?
