StudioCanal: Bunuel: the Essential Collection
That Bunuel set looks great, especially since I never upgraded any of my Criterions after they went OOP. And perfect timing for our list project too!kompromiss wrote:Some great releases are up for pre-order on amazon.co.uk:

It's most annoying that the specs don't say whether Belle de Jour in the set is the new 4k resto or the old release.

Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
Surely it has to be the restoration, given that it's theirs and they're bringing out the box specifically to mark the film's half-century?

You'd think so but it'd be good to have it confirmed. Plus all available audio tracks for Tristiana etc.

Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
I'm assuming it won't have Spanish, as the previous StudioCanal release didn't either. Which is a shame, as that's my preferred language for Tristana.

There are a lot of essential Buñuel films missing from that Essential Buñuel set. They should have put "late" in the title.

Let's be real: other than Un chien Andalou, these are the Bunuel films most casual film viewers know, and seems like a great deal for some great movies, several of which are making their Blu-ray debuts in the set

Fine, but I'd personally be more excited for even just a DVD set of his Mexican films.

'Late Bunuel' does sound about right. Counts as a blind buy for me nonetheless.
Besides Belle De Jour, did any of the other films have restorations that havent been released on home video ?

Pathe put out a blu-ray of this with English subs in France. Who has the UK rights for it? Studio Canal?knives wrote:It would be nice to see Fever Mounts at El Pao.

Sweet, RB? I've only 14 Bunuel's to do and would like to get them done for the list.

Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
I've asked twice over at The Other Forums whether Kino has any plans to release Los Olvidados, since they were listed as the rights-holder the last time it screened locally, but he ignored/overlooked my post—it would appear intentionally, as, both times, MisterLime answered the questions surrounding my post but not mine, and he's generally a good sport about answering everything, no matter how mundane... I've only seen Los Olvidados and loved it, so I'm keen on seeing the rest in good quality.

El, Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz and Los Olividados are amazing films that I hope can be restored for Blu ray.
Argento borrowed the music from Cruz's music box for the weird Tenebrae dream/flashback sequences.
I had a good time with Eureka's recent release of Death in the Garden, by the way, another '50s Bunuel.

On the back of the box there is that little triangle thingy with A B and C in it so I guess you're ready to roll. It's a dual format combo too.knives wrote:Sweet, RB? I've only 14 Bunuel's to do and would like to get them done for the list.

Re: StudioCanal: Buñuel: the Essential Collection
Pretty much any British boutique label would love to get their hands on restorations of the Mexican Buñuels, but the stumbling block is that these don't yet exist, and I imagine they'd be a bit of a challenge.

This set will probably be my breaking point to finally become region free. It's the same release of Obscure Object of Desire that they for some reason put out already?

No reason to assume otherwise: I imagine Belle de Jour is the only one they've revamped.

The restored Belle de Jour on the new Studio Canal Blu-ray looks great.

I wonder if this is different from the restored version released in Canada a couple of years ago (which looked pretty good compared to any previous version I had seen)?artfilmfan wrote:The restored Belle de Jour on the new Studio Canal Blu-ray looks great.

Re: Studio Canal/Kinowelt/Optimum
The Canadian Blu-ray might have come from the same source as the previous Studio Canal release. The color of the new restored version falls between the reddish Criterion and the previous greenish Studio Canal. So, David's assessment that it looks pinkish is somewhat accurate I watched it with the subs turned off so that I could concentrate on the beautifully restored image.

Re: StudioCanal: Buñuel: the Essential Collection
I can't imagine anything looking better (and truer to the first screened print I saw) than the version on the Canadian BluRay... It was like being carried back in time... (I remember being horrified by the Miramax DVD -- which I never watched a second time).
