They're doing one thing right at least:
VCI wrote:Well folks, there ain’t no beatin’ around the bush, we actually did goof this one up! The BD of White Zombie was in fact encoded at a bit rate under 10Mbs, as reported by DVD Beaver, and as most of those “in the know” know, the normal bit rate should have been north of 30Mbs. Believe me, we didn’t do this intentionally. Frankly there is no logical reason, or even a monetary incentive, to skimp on the bit rate. We just goofed up! Thanks to Ben Gart for bringing the DVD Beaver report to our attention. Certainly points up a gap in our QC process, which we will be working to correct. So, what is VCI going to do about it!!!! We have already corrected our Blu-ray master, and we are proud to say it was encoded at a 35Mbs rate. New product will be replicated ASAP. We have already notified our distribution partners to stop all further sales/shipments, and to purge their current inventory of all skimpy encoded discs. We will also make a direct replacement, at no cost, to anyone who purchased/received a skimpy encoded Blu-ray. Consumers should call our customer service department at 800-331-4077, between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm CDT, to order a replacement disc. I keep referring to these as “skimpy encoded discs,” because even though the encoded bit rate should have been higher, the overall quality of our restoration was still able to shine through, earning us several very favorable reviews. I can’t promise we won’t goof up some other DVD or BD project in the future, but I can promise we will fess up and then fix up, our goofs, the best we can. Bob Blair, president of VCI.

Usually watermarks are annoying and obtrusive, but at least they did this a little creatively and non-obtrusively. Being a public domain title I see that they want to protect their restoration being copied and used by other companies.

Good to know that they will rectify the bitrate problem, but will it still be an MPEG2 encode?

According to blu-ray.com, VCI has released Blu-Rays of these films. The amazon pages do not even indicate them as BDs. I would appreciate any information. Thanks.

VCI only released them on DVD and I don't remember them even being announced on blu. Amazon listings are actually for DVD-R re-releases. The Way Ahead is released in France on blu by Elephant, separately or in upcoming Coffret Carol Reed.

From Blu-ray.com forum re: the Black Tent
Just received this in the post today.

It is actually a BD-R not a proper pressed Blu-Ray disc. This is really poor from VCI, I would not have bought it if I'd known it was a BD-R.

Appears to play OK on my Pansonic, but for how long ?

PQ is good.
I would bet a million dollars it's actually a DVD-R and not a BD-R

Looks like it's indeed a BD-R and not a DVD-R.

I'd forgotten VCI's promise to redo their botched White Zombie and figured when that happened somebody somewhere would review it - and maybe at last there might be a watchable upgrade beyond the old Roan SD. But I never heard anything further. Did this happen?

Via Facebook VCI Horror Movies:
"As a matter of fact we do have some to announce. First up in November is the complete uncut, widescreen version of "What the Peeper Saw" with Britt Ekland. This will be a VCI Webstore exclusive and limited to only a 2,000 unit run. We will also be releasing "The Prowler [1951]," "The Flying Deuces," in early 2015 on BD. Stay tuned as there are more to come."

Hopefully they'll release Horrors of the Black Museum (1959) on Blu-ray at some point.

That's surprisingly affordable considering the gouging that seems to normally go on with small labels and limited run Blu-rays

Hopefully they learn how to properly release titles in HD without interlacing...

It was always priced at $29.99 with a discounted web price being at $19.99. With a coupon, it now drops to $11.99 + shipping.

Still, is anyone actually going to buy this thing (What the Peeper Saw)? The Tooze made it sound horrible - MPEG-2, wrong aspect ratio, cut (despite claiming to be "uncut"), "more like video than film," etc. I wouldn't bother with any VCI blu-rays as they clearly haven't figured out this HD thing yet. I guess the one positive being that they learned to encode the Blu-ray as though it were one, and not a DVD (see White Zombie).

That is true. I hoped they would figure out blu-ray authoring before releasing The Prowler. Hopefully, Wild Side Vidéo in France that released it on DVD can do it properly on blu.

Blu-rays of One Million B.C. (1940) and Topper (1937) in September and October, respectively.

VCI has released a dull and waxy Blu-ray edition of Blood and Black Lace in what some claim to be the "correct" 1.85:1 aspect ratio. A few Blu-ray.com posters are already proclaiming this to be superior to Arrow's edition for aspect ratio alone, despite the fact that it otherwise looks like crap.
