La truite and Seance on a Wet Afternoon were both Homevision DVDs. L'argent seems like big news. Happy to finally see the usually maligned The Plough and the Stars myself (which was an RKO release originally but ended up in Janus' hands much like The Devil and Daniel Webster did).

Yeah, if Criterion has the rights to L'argent, I can't imagine they don't also have A Man Escaped, and that they won't both be forthcoming in the mainline.

Is Criterion sitting on any other Losey films? I would love a release of at least one of his films.

Back in the day, Home Vision Entertainment also released Losey's Time Without Pity and Mr. Klein. I believe, if I recall correctly, those were Janus properties.

I'm rather excited for the Plough and the Stars. It's not a ford I've tried hard to find, but it's been on my list for almost a decade. heck, I still have films from Ford at Fox to go through. but that title will incentivize me to try Hulu out.

Plough and the Stars is a surprise for sure. I thought Warners held the rights.

You should google for the information on how to do it precisely, but if you install IE9 on your computer, you can get a free month of Hulu Plus starting March 28. As loathe as I am to have any sort of IE product on my computer, this made me cave (for a month anyway).

Hah! Wasn't Cousin, Cousine one of the films promised about a hundred years ago in that big catalogue? Not that anybody's been holding their breath, I'm sure.

If they're streaming films from that first DVD catalogue I wonder if they'll put Cocktail Molotov out as well then!

Just saw this for the first time a couple of weeks ago on TCM. Makes the American remake with Ted Danson look stupid and, except for Isabella Rossellini (at the prime of her beauty), a classic French farce that's both funny and sexy as hell. Also, as a side-benefit of Criterion taking so long to release this, when/if it comes out it will definitely be on Blu-ray (unless Criterion shocks us with a Tacchella Eclipse set).

I really hope they don't dump the Gosha's they own online. I've been waiting for physical copies of those for years! :(

I don't think Hulu necessarily constitutes a dumping ground. It's a good way to get their newest catalogues and some other stuff out there quick and making money. I'm sure most of them will corporealize gradually. They've obviously got no plans to let up with Chaplin or Korda, for example, however long it takes.

I have a theory that could involve Gosha. If I'm any good with patterns, either the next Eclipse set or the one after will be a Japanese master--probably Mizoguchi so they can have two Kurosawa and two Mizoguchi sets before they get to a third Ozu, to dispel the illusion of spamming the latter. Then one or two more non-Japanese sets before they get to another more obscure/cultish Japanese one, which could be that horror/sci-fi set, a second Nikkatsu set, or that second samurai set they promised five years ago and would definitely include a Gosha or two. That's my theory, anyway.

Should we be reading anything into the fact that the eclipse logo shows up at the beginning of Tokyo Drifter on Hulu?

Death Shadows 1986 - Gosha
Also the first and third Hanzo the Razor

No. If for no other reason than their knowing I would never forgive them.

And an other Gosha, Death Shadows. There are Gosha films out by Animeigo out, but I would kill for a Criterion release with some nice special features on the man.

Also, I pray that if the second Hanzo the Razor isn't up online, they might be saving it for a Yasuzo Masamura set. It's a weird film for the man to do, but a tremendous amount of fun an no doubt the best in the whole series.

They also added Cruel Story of Youth which I urge everyone to watch immediately. I hope the put it out soon with the other two films in his youth trilogy. It's worth watching alone for having some of the most beautiful cinematography in all of Oshima's oeuvre.

Oh. man, I haven't visited this in a couple of weeks -- seeing the Ford, Gosha, Tacchella, Oshima, dumped on Hulu without a disc release makes me want to vomit. This thread is going to hurt.

I think that's making an unwarranted assumption- as Doctor Sunshine pointed out, they put all their Chaplin up on Hulu, and there's no way that's not getting a disc release eventually.

Has anyone tried asking Criterion if any of these films have plans for a DVD release(beyond the Chaplins obviously)?

It's all just speculation. Maybe in 5–6 months we'll have a better idea of what it means for an unreleased catalog item to get dumped into Hulu. Then it will just be mostly speculation.
