Gimme Shelter has actually been on Hulu Plus for some time. For whatever reason, Hulu occasionally takes films down just to upload them again a few hours later.

I don't know the rhyme or reason to Criterion updating their Hulu channel, but I sure wish they'd start adding films on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Even if they just uploaded one or two obscure films - it would still be better than waiting months on end for an update.

You guys do realize that there are over 900 movies currently uploaded, right? That represents years of quality movie watching. If preconceived notions are preventing you from exploring the existing content, I would question your true love of movies. I promise you will find some gems.

Perhaps it occurred to you that some of us are patiently waiting for specific titles to be uploaded, are enjoying the existing catalog meanwhile, and really don't need your condescending admonishments. Or maybe it didn't.

Christmas Amazon sale... when will it be? Usually Amazon has a Criterion sale at Christmas, right?

Agreed. I'm patiently waiting for more films by John Ford, Carol Reed, Federico Fellini, etc. I'm certainly very grateful that Criterion offers such a stellar, wonderful service, but that doesn't mean that I can't hope that a good thing keeps getting better and better.

I noticed something interesting on Hulu. The Jungle Book, unlike the other films included in the Sabu! Eclipse set, is presented with a general placeholder cover (the "we own it but haven't restored it/are working on putting it out" cover). Does this indicate that it may be getting a standalone release? I know the possibility of certain Eclipse films getting Blu releases has been discussed in the past (Les Miserables, etc.) but this is the first time I've seen this. Thoughts?

Yes, the possibility was hinted by Kim three years ago at the Wexner talk in response to my Twitter question. iTune has the HD copy for a long time now. If they could release Korda's The Four Feathers at that condition, why not this one? At the same time she confirmed that Les Miserables will be coming as a stand alone upgrade. I am not sure when we will see these things happening though. Unfortunately, Criterion has unique priorities. Recently they are on a roll to release or upgrade the films, which are already available on HD in other parts of the World. Lets hope for the best.

Ingmar Bergman's Dreams, Les Blank's Hot Pepper, and Jun Ichikawa's little seen film Kaisha monogatari: Memories of You were all added to Hulu Plus this morning.

The update could remain small, but if they decide to update Hulu like they did a few months ago, then we may see more films pop up throughout the day.

Also, Seven Samurai and Tokyo Story now have HD streams on Hulu.

A friend reports that Jun Ichikawa's "Kaisha monogatari / Memories of You (actual translation "Office Story") is now available on Hulu+. A nice low-key movie -- somewhat atypical for Ichikawa in that it centers on older "salarymen" -- not kids, youth or youngish adults.

Young Girls of Rochefort is listed as expiring on March 2nd, and the others aren't. Notably, its also one of the handful of Criterion movies still on Netflix, but doesn't seem to be expiring from there though.

Eh, I wouldn't read too much into it. Valerie and Her Week of Wonders was constantly in and out for a while on their Hulu channel. But for what it's worth, the Netflix stream is courtesy of Miramax.

Two films by Agnes Varda were also added: The Young Girls Turn 25 and Jacquot de Nantes.

I just want to say that this update is AWESOME. I have never watched a Jacques Demy film and now I have a wonderful opportunity to jump into his filmography.

Including Parking, The Pied Piper, and A Slightly Pregnant Man which were not in last years box set. Also includes Varda's Jacquot de Nantes based on his childhood.

You are in for a serious treat then, his films are so great. I would recommend watching them in order, or at least watch Lola before The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

We've got a Hulu trial at the moment (wife forgot to record Nashville and apparently this is a near tragedy) and browsing criterion I saw the second most popular film is something I've never heard of, premier desires. Which seems to be an Emmanuel esque soft core porn flick, is that all it is or is there merit to the film?

It also has some nice cinematography going for it, but it's basically just there for the raincoat brigade.

It like all David Hamilton films are literally just vaseline-lensed highbrow wank material of dubious legality

For awhile the most watched on Hulu were either samurai or films with the possibility of seeing boobs. Hopefully that says more about the general users of Hulu than Criterion fans!

On a similar subject: I had watched about 1/3 of the superb The Love Goddesses (by Saul Turell) - (I stopped it for the night, then the next day it lost my place and wouldn't let me skip ahead, then the film expired for non Hulu+ members). Anyway, from what I saw, it does an excellent job of covering the history of sex in film - and I'd highly recommend it on the strength of the first 30 minutes :P . I assume it will make its way on the eventual And God Created Woman or some Bardot set (I didn't realize they had the rights to so many Bardot films).

This is going to make me sound like a fuddy-duddy, but is there any way to see all the Criterion films available on iTunes? If I search iTunes for Criterion or Criterion collection, it only gives me one result for movies (Red from the 3 Colors Trilogy) and I can't click on the publisher or studio to see only their films. While I can find specific films that I search for, I'd like to see the whole collection available. If anyone knows what I'm missing here, thanks!

There's sometimes an easier way, but the generally permanent solution is to go to the store, the movies section, the subcategory "classics", and there's a list of recent titles followed by a few buttons (now labelled Oscars, musicals, etc.) Scroll along there and the Criterion subsection should be there somewhere.

Actually, you could get the list from criterion.com.
