Criterion responded to me quickly : "We never had rights secured, but we'd still like to release it some day".

Good to know.
P.S: I saw a few copies of the film listed on ebay from Korea. I don't know if they're legit or not though.

Why is there a separate thread for this? It's not coming.

There is a really good Italian release of the film with English subtitles by RHV.

You're right. The RHV edition is one of the best DVDs of a Bertolucci film (or anyone else) there has ever been.
Superb image, many extras, and everything subtitled in English.
The Korean discs on e-bay are bootlegs of this.

Where can I find the RHV release. It doesn't appear to be on the Italian amazon site. Anyhow, someone mentioned on facebook BFI will be releasing this, which is just as well.

Really? It used to be there for about £20. I hope it's not out of print.
Even if you have to pay £30+ for it, it's worth it.
I'll let you know if I find one.

The BFI have currently a Bertolucci season, and they've put BEFORE THE REVOLUTION on wider release, maybe there'll be a DVD/BR after but early days yet....

Sorry guys, but as far as I can tell from searching several Italian etailers, RHV's DVD of Prima della rivoluzione appears to be OOP.

While it's possible to access Ripley's Film site, their home video site is completely inaccessible making it impossible to know the status of their home video wing.

But only on DVD, so you might as well wait. Even if you don't have a Blu-ray player, the BFI's release is future-proofed (or at least future-extended) in a way that the RHV one isn't.

Later this year, I imagine, given last month's theatrical revival - but I don't know the exact date.

I don't think there's any chance the blu ray side of that disc will be region free is there? I've got a region free DVD player and an R1/RA blu ray player. A region free blu ray player is currently not within my budget.

The second I know, I'll update the BFI's region list.

But then again, I don't think BFI has released anything region free, have they?

Although this is wildly untrue as a general statement (the current ratio is 40 region-free titles to 23 Region B ones), I'm sorry to have to report that Before the Revolution will sadly be in the latter group.

Apologies - but it's a contractual obligation laid down by the rightsholder. In fact, all the BFI's Italian titles seem to be region-locked at present.

So the Italians hate Americans...it's ok you can say it.

So who does hold the rights for this film in America?

I think New Yorker owns the US rights.

I picked up the VHS a few years back when New Yorker was giving up the ghost (or at least getting rid of its tapes).

...Unfortunately, I see I never took the plastic wrap off.
