Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
The oyster/pearls suggests pearl diving to me, hence Tabu does make sense. The only other film that struck me as a possibility while doing a google search was the 1948 adaptation of Steinbeck's The Pearl, which seems far too obscure to be a clue.
The mime has a close enough resemblance to Pierre Etaix (especially the bushy eyebrows) that I'm willing to buy that as the solution.

I could have sworn that Blow-Up had been rumored, but it may have just been those buffoons on Facebook.... I thought that Ryan guessed the Pierre Etaix set for the mime, but looking back, it looks like he named both. I'll admit mine are far-fetched, although Criterion obviously wants us to make stretches, as is evident with that Lean/Coward clue.

The seagulls remind me of von Sternberg for some reason. Chukhrai's The Forty-First keeps coming up in my searches as well but I've never seen the film and images are hard to dig up.
EDIT: Or Lumet's The Sea Gull?

Yeah, it is the pearl bed itself which is "taboo," so it would make sense to have multiple oysters with pearls.ianungstad wrote:The oyster/pearls suggests pearl diving to me, hence Tabu does make sense.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Gotta be. We know Pina is coming, and I couldn't believe that Criterion would be giving us clues for stuff already officially announced. Great catch, Ian!ianungstad wrote:Could it be this and not an iceberg?
Here's my take on we know:
Near Certainties:
Coney Island = Lonesome
threesome = Y Tu Mama Tambien
marionette = Being John Malkovich
wacky bike = Quadrophenia
lusty chick on car = Summer with Monika
hooded woman on bike + guy digging grave = Harold and Maude
generic cars and honking = Week-End
Eating Raoul sign = Eating Raoul
three samurai = Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy upgrade
hole that Harold is digging = Shallow Grave
Strong Possibilities:
big wet rock = Pina
vehicle transport = five films by Wim Wenders
Maude's medallion = Rosemary's Baby
bow = Arabian Nights
oysters & pearls = Tabu
Who Knows:
wave = Breaking the Waves?, The Last Wave?, New Wave Eclipse set?
mime = Blow-up? Etaix? La Strada? Children of Paradise? -- none seem compelling

Criterion always have announced titles on the New Years drawings (example War Trilogy and Dillinger is Dead being announced for Jan/Feb, yet still showed up on that New Years drawing).

This is out of print, unfortunately.NABOB OF NOWHERE wrote:Is there room for Tati's Trafic as an upgrade in all this vehicular stuff. I haven't seen it for years but isn't there a transporter in it?
Could any of these cars be The Conformist?

I can't see that being anything other than A Night to Remember. Not too mention that all the characters are on a path to crash into it.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Could the 'mime' possibly be a gondolier from Summertime?
Or one of the two gentlemen from Partie de Campagne (although his trousers are light in colour and I don't recall a hat)
EDIT: On second thoughts the man I'm thinking of wears a short sleeved t shirt quite unlike that in the picture, no buttons etc.
But i'm not convinced it's a mime.

I know it's a Lions Gate title and they just released it on Blu-Ray in October, but what about The Conversation for the mime clue?

The lines probably mean nothing. You could maybe say it's a clue for The 5 Obstructions but I don't know if I buy that.

Criterion lost the rights to Trafic, didn't they?NABOB OF NOWHERE wrote:Is there room for Tati's Trafic as an upgrade in all this vehicular stuff. I haven't seen it for years but isn't there a transporter in it?

Haha!! So unlikely, but given that von Trier's my favorite director, who am I to argue? I'd love for him to have a stellar year. Too bad there isn't a supermoon(!!!) in the drawing! Maude's medallion (which I'm not entirely convinced is Rosemary's Baby) looks to be a five pointed star which could be connected to the five lines I suppose. Is anyone skilled enough with Photoshop to make the design clearer?

How could Ruth Gordon wearing a pentagram medallion be anything other than Rosemary's Baby?Calvin wrote:

Good point, I'd forgotten that Ruth Gordon was in both films. I got hung up on the discrepancies between the medallion and the tannis root necklace that was mentioned in the previous thread.

The Trilogy of Life and Breaking the Waves... I'm convinced. I am happy.
