Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Seems like Monterey Pop should've been a July release. There was some interview saying a 50th anniversary edition was going to be coming to the UK in November, thus a US release should be coming as well.
There's banners all over LA for the 50th anniversary (a museum exhibit) + they held a second Monterey Pop Festival this year with a decidedly less interesting lineup, although The Animals managed to be the only group to make it to this & the original festival (I don't think this recent concert will have the staying "voice of a generation" remembrance to it).

Where's all the speculation for Toni Erdmann coming from? Did I miss something?

Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
If Monterey pop drops, will it drop as their first foray into 4K?
iirc, When they started bluray, they started it in November and they announced 10 titles which then were delayed into trickling out from November to January.
So what's likely, 4K wise, to drop with Monterey pop? Kick off The Bergman '18 festivities a couple months early with a Seventh Seal 4K? (I'm presuming we will get an IB100 box in November 2018 with everything on blu)
Seven samurai 4K? Fear and Loathing 4K? Dr Strangelove 4K? Mulhulland Dr. 4K? On the waterfront 4K?
Perhaps Tree of Life 4K if it is also a new release?
That makes for an interesting question, if they start issuing 4K releases for new releases like presumably, Tree of Life, do they do three SKU releases, DVD, blu, and 4K ? Or do they drop DVD? Or do a dual format 4K + Blu?

None of the above? I just don't see it happening, and certainly not with a boatload of launch titles, and not starting with Monterey Pop. It's just going to be a rerelease with some new features and the new restoration.movielocke wrote:If Monterey pop drops, will it drop as their first foray into 4K?

They also would never be able to do dual format 4K+Blu whilst dropping Blu because people would riot.

4K should never be a thing if we're still getting fold-out leaflets for 85% of releases

I can't see 4K happening with boutique labels any time soon.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Given that all the footage for Monterey Pop was shot on 16mm, it would be a particularly bad choice to show off the resolution of a 4K UHD disc.

How far down the Kurosawa totem pole of BD upgrades do you think The Bad Sleep Well is?

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
They've been sitting on Dersu Uzala for at least a year (the restored version's been on Filmstruck's beta site that long, in addition to clips being shown at a talk in March or April of last year I think?), so that's probably the next Kurosawa release (assuming they keep with these November releases - I assume they sell well so are a good end-of-year, sale-month release). I'd personally guess Bad Sleep Well is more likely than most of the other Kurosawas to be upgraded, but that's just more of a gut-feeling rather than anything resembling a concrete basis.

I suppose in terms of stature, I could see Red Beard or Stray Dog ahead of it in line.Ribs wrote:They've been sitting on Dersu Uzala for at least a year (the restored version's been on Filmstruck's beta site that long, in addition to clips being shown at a talk in March or April of last year I think?), so that's probably the next Kurosawa release (assuming they keep with these November releases - I assume they sell well so are a good end-of-year, sale-month release). EDIT: assuming they don't get Ran back as well.

Maybe they'll get to it for a Shakespeare month, with Godard's Lear and an Olivier Hamlet upgrade?
