Re: Filmstruck
It's nice to see the rest of the Handmade titles coming in but I really don't think Criterion is ever going to put The Missionary, Checking Out, or Bullshot out on disc any time soon if ever. But I really hope they do put Five Corners out again. I'm pretty sure the laserdisc had a commentary with Tony Bill and getting new interviews with Robbins and the rest of the cast would be lovely. It's such a gorgeous and underrated film with a tone something more akin to Local Hero and Housekeeping than to the Scorsese thrillers it always gets billed with.D50 wrote:Criterion Channel adds + Putney Swope

Re: Filmstruck
You do not need an account to see what's on Filmstruck. The website is free and open to use: here's a link.
That said, they've established a rhythm that each Friday one of the 3 new categories added is a "Directed by..." subsection, which then remain up for six months following that date. If you navigate to the page for that subsection, you'll see the list of them, in order of when they were added (most recent first). You can therefore count up to determine when one particular director's offering will be pulled; for example, Renoir is seven from the top, so it'll be pulled seven weeks from Friday. Toni will likely stay up on the Criterion Channel past that date, however.

Re: Filmstruck
Tried out streaming a movie on an Apple TV 4, the other day. (It was the one last Romy Schneider film (Max and the Junkmen) I wanted to get to before my two month free beta expired, but didn't manage to.) As opposed to what I had experienced with the Roku 3, which was pretty smooth sailing just about always (while the movie was actually playing), I noted a hiccup (a lost frame or two), every several seconds on the Apple TV. I switched to watching it on a Roku Premiere+ and no hiccups. (I think the subtitling issue I was also seeing was happening on both (seems like some were missing here and there).)
Yes, I bought some new toys to go with the receiver I had to replace. Very preliminary but it seems the Roku Premiere+ is not an issue free environment either, as I can easily get it to crash when trying to exit Filmstruck for one example. But playback is the key, so it would appear that Roku is going to remain the place where I stream it for the time being. Probably will hold on to the Premeire+ and return the (refurb) Apple (even though it is perkier by far compared to the old Apple TV 3 I have) and see what Apple comes up with for the 5 (which I suspect is coming pretty soon).
Oh, unless somebody knows a way to make the hiccups go away on the Apple TV... then I might reconsider the return.

Filmstruck doesn't easily label things as HD-ready, but going by eye, I think only Big Parade and Stella Dallas are in HD, with the rest looking pretty dated (the Crowd especially).TMDaines wrote:Are these in HD?Ribs wrote:New non-Criterion additions:

Re: Filmstruck
Makes sense. Stella Dallas has life online has a fairly decent HDTV rip. The Fountainhead might be in HD too. That's floating about online in 720p from a web source.
Would be great to be able to buy these on Blu-ray.

Re: Filmstruck
While I'm thinking about the Renoir films: they have Nana and the running time is listed as 2 hours 30 minutes (150 minutes). I have that Lionsgate/ Studio Canal 3 disc set from 2007 and the running time for Nana is listed as 130 minutes. I've yet to watch the Filmstruck version and I'm uncertain perhaps if the Lionsgate/Studio Canal set has an incorrect running time listed. It's been a decade since I last saw it and I'm uncertain which running time is correct. Imdb lists the running time as 150 minutes as well.

Re: Filmstruck
Filmstruck's listed running time has no correlation to the actual posted films; they're just copied over from IMDb. Nana is 130 minutes.

Actually, JUBILEE, although Criterion-branded, is not on the Criterion Channel, but only on the FilmStruck channel. Also FANTASTIC PLANET and its supplements have been on the Criterion Channel for a while now. It has just been made available for FilmStruck-only subscribers.D50 wrote:

Re: Filmstruck
I liked Jarman's output when they came out, but upon revisiting I find many to be overindulgent. The Jarman titles I'd like most from Criterion are Blue, Caravaggio, Edward II, & a music video collection. For me, Jubilee is one of his worst & I'm perplexed why Criterion chose it.
Nice to see more Joan Crawford, hopefully this portends more Criterion blu-rays. I can't think of a Criterion release I'd like more than a Joan Crawford box set (except for maybe a Bette Davis box set depending on the titles included) & I was disappointed to see Criterion not release Sudden Fear & that Kino released Daisy Kenyon. Anyone know if the transfers are the same as the recently-released blu-rays? What's with Criterion only getting online distribution for these? Could they be waiting for restorations?

Re: Filmstruck
I'd imagine Kino et al's licenses don't include digital, and so they're open to licensing from other parties.
