I feel like the film that stands out to me for this moment is Riefenstahl’s Olympia. I can see Criterion rereleasing Tokyo Olympiad and pushing for Spine 1000 to be Riefenstahl. Would definitely introduce her to more people outside Triumph Des Willens and has an abundance of supplements they could include that weren’t in the 100 Years Box Set

Your all wrong!
Spine #1000 will be a lovingly curated box-set of Brownlow and Gill's Hollywood: The Pioneers, with all clearance rights sorted!

And then I wake up . . . :D

An honest guess: With the news of a tour in the "Janus Films" thread, I can earnestly see Paris Is Burning being #1000.

How about a "Chantal Akerman in the '80s" Eclipse set? I'd die of shock if it happened, but, you know, also of happiness.

Criterion has shown to be mindful of spine numbers before (#666 and #900) so I would be shocked if they didn't schedule something special to be #1000, even if it is just Grand Budapest.

We have a lot of eclipse sets to go before 1,000!

Maybe we'll never get a 1000th spine

.... because Criterion announces they will no longer have spine numbers after 999.

If this pace of 4 new spines per month continues we will get 1000 by November

I find it extremely satisfying that Criterion DID NOT make 1984 spine number 984. see, they're clearly not spine numerology fetishists. :-p

What's the significance of 888 for Stalker?

I can’t believe some of you still think UHD is ever happening for Criterion
What if Studio Canal said to criterion: "Lionsgate has bluray and dvd rights to Grand Illusion, Ran, Third Man and Contempt, so they're not available, but Lionsgate passed on the option we offered them for 4K disc rights, would criterion be interested in acquiring 4k disc rights--and only 4k disc rights--to those titles?"

I think that sort of scenario might push Criterion to do 4k releases, and only for such titles as high profile as those, but I wouldn't expect it to indicate any broader company wide trend in upgrading catalog titles.

but would they price them at $49.95 or $59.95 or even higher? ;)

If Roma is happening I can envisage it as a 4k release. Don’t really imagine anything else on the immediate agenda that would warrant it.

Well I hope you enjoyed it while it lasted. It looks like they reassigned the month's spine numbers and now 1984 is spine 984.

Hah! Fitting right in with their 666 light hearted sense of humor about spine numbers!
