I think the Modern Times cover is amazing. Sometimes minimalism works. I seem to recall that it is some version of a Polish Chaplin poster.

The Antichrist cover is incredible, I admire the restrained perversity.
I love that too! In fact, looking at the title formation made me think of the exact shot that Jeff posted on the previous page.the touch I like most on Night of the Hunter is the title font making a stair step

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
Two things bug me about the Antichrist cover: the font, size, and positioning of von Trier's credit seems like an afterthought and is kind of an eyesore. And call me silly, but it strikes me as being a bit too restrained. I would have gone a little brighter and a little bloodier - it lacks the quease-factor of the source material, and doesn't go for broke quite like the Saló cover does. But I still adore their choice of image and title font, and can't wait to see the inside artwork. Scissors on the front of the booklet and a wrench on the back?

Presumably they're going to have a lot of Chaplin coming out by and by, and it would be a little exhausting to use her on every cover.domino harvey wrote:Why would you hire Beaton for the poster, then churn out that for the cover art?

I'll bet you cash money they use her on exactly zero covers.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
My first reaction to the Modern Times art was pretty positive, but after letting it sink in for a day I'm just not feeling it any more. There's no depth to it - you see it, you process it instantly, and then that's it. There's nothing to it.
I really like Night of the Hunter, though. That's going to make one attractive digipack, presumably.

The Night of the Hunter stands out among them. I believe it will be beautiful when i will hold the real thing in my hands. Hopefully another wonderful Digipack ala The Leopard.
America Lost and Found suits the movies that will be included in the set, and i can't wait to see how the covers for the individual films will work out. Don't really have much to say about "Antichrist", actually i don't have "anything" at all.
"Modern Times?" I really hope they change it. I looks chheap. The only thing i like about it is the contast of the whites , greys, and blacks. But CC, please don't let this out of your vaults.
Continue your wonderful work Criterion.

I'm double diping with The Night of the Hunter and probably The Last Picture Show too, hope they create a great design for this one.
Don't like Modern Times cover, plus i already own almost all Chaplin's movies in mk2 editions.

Night of the Hunter will have to be a digipak. It's a double disc BD.

I was talking to Becker on AIM. He said they've finally perfected a version of the figure-8 case for BDs and TNOTH will be the first recipient. Sorry, guys and gals.

Really? That's not the end of the world but kind of a bummer if true. Expensive sets should have premium packaging, IMO.med wrote:I was talking to Becker on AIM. He said they've finally perfected a version of the figure-8 case for BDs and TNOTH will be the first recipient. Sorry, guys and gals.

See, this is where I don't like getting rid of post counts. I never would have even considered that was true had I seen that med only had 89 posts here. And an unfamiliar avatar to boot.
Still, good to know it's all just made up. Coming off the heels of the upcoming Paths of Glory O-ring digi, a Night of the Hunter figure-8 would have been especially disappointing.

It honestly didn't occur to me that anyone would've taken that post seriously.
To keep this from straying too far from the thread's purpose, I cannot work up the frothing hatred some of you have for the Modern Times cover, but it is a little blah. The rest I like well enough.

Sorry, Guys. It's a fact that you are all wrong about the Modern Times cover. It is brilliant.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
I like the Chaplin- it's a little spare, and certainly I would have preferred something by Kate Beaton, but I think it looks good in its own right. I'm wondering if they're setting up a design scheme for all the Chaplins, though- if they're all altered straight on headshots like that, it would get a bit dull.

It's probably not a good sign that the first thing I thought of looking at the Modern Times cover was Vampyr NOT the famous gear / wrench scene in the film. It looks like the cover of a mid-80s eastern European academic tome dismantling the myth of Włóczęga.

I doubt it. It's unlikely that they'll spend less effort on the Chaplins than they do on any other director's films--Chaplin's kind of a big deal. Also, I bet this one will bring in a lot of Clockwork Orange fans.matrixschmatrix wrote:I'm wondering if they're setting up a design scheme for all the Chaplins

Modern Times is truly awful, it looks like a bad photoshop joke.
On the positive side, Antichrist is original, daring and works well.
Modern Times 1/10
Antichrist 9/10
BBS story set 6/10
Night of the Hunter 5/10 (boring)

Thankfully Criterion did not go with the "scissor" cover.
