Looks like the whole set is up again.

This may seem like a silly question, but does anyone know if the extras from the Kurosawa Criterions out now will be on these discs? The website doesn't seem to say definitively.

No chance. They're essentially an Essential Art House release.

Note how even Criterion -- even Criterion, who lavished kudos and bonus features upon Michael Bay and Benjamin Button -- struggles to find anything vaguely positive to say about Sanshiro Sugata Part 2.

Also, an AV Club article:

Did anyone notice Ran isn't included in this massive box ?

Why is that ? So owners rights issues ?

Since it ran OOP, it's weird it's not included in here.

That seems to me to be the perfect reason it's not included here.

On the plus side, Ran not being included surely resulted in one more of the unreleased titles being included so there would still be a nice round 25 films in the box

or maybe they could have actually put in some effort and done the complete 30 box set. What do these people even do during the day?

So, it could be because it ran OOP that it's not included ?

I don't really understand why. Is this some rights issue ?

I mean, it's OOP, so a new way of owning it would be by buying the box, it would be like a re-realease.

Ok, then.
I thought it was cause the edition was limited or something.
Now I understand.

Thanks.

Do we move this to the Eclipse and EA forum?

Am I doing a terrible mistake in assuming that all of these titles will be available individually on DVD within 3 or 4 years? I think of the "never before released on home video" titles.

Somebody asked that on their Facebook page, and they said
Quote:
We can't make any promises there. We'd like to get them out as singles so that anyone who has been collecting Criterion Kurosawas over time doesn't have to spring for the big box just to get four films, but our schedule is pretty jammed, so we can't say at the moment when or which of these might get separate releases. That said, we are certainly sensitive to the issue and will be taking it into account as we make the schedule.

It sounds like -- "we'll think about it -- but it's not even remotely a priority". ;~{

Yeah, it doesn't sound too good to me either. On the other hand, if their current preference for more contemporary and/or mainstream films is indeed partly caused by their economic situation, it would be a most logical thing to release the remaining films on their own pretty soon. If anything sells these days, it must be Kurosawa.

All I can say is that I would have bought a "Very Early Kurosawa" Eclipse set in a flash -- and a stand-alone Madadayo in due course. But not even the slightest chance I'll buy their mammoth box set.

Very much in agreement - I'd love to complete my Kurosawa collection, but at the cost of 21 redundant films? (I've already got the UK Madadayo disc) They'd darn well better release them separately, or even just in their Essential Art House line. I'm getting angry flashbacks to Tartan's big Bergman boxset exclusively including the previously unavailable Dreams.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I'm definitely getting this and have budgeted for it. I am a bit disheartened about Ran but I've still got the Masterworks/Wellspring edition which isn't too bad.

I just realized, does this mean the The Seven Samurai has been recompressed onto 1 disc?
