I was thinking I might post the results tonight at around midnight MDT in the U.S. Is there anyone still working on a list that would rather I wait until tomorrow morning?

I saw the film, but can't think of what you might mean other than Terry O'Quinn's nude shower scene. Spoiler reminder, please?

I'm enjoying picturing that it was actually prompted by Terry O'Quinn casually taking a shower.

I was going for a joke, but I suppose that it may have come off sounding a bit...homophobic. Not my intention. However, if you seen the movie (actually it's the opening scene), then you'd realize that the shower is anything but casual.

You're forgetting that domino and his ex originally connected after mutually lamenting the lack of movie scenes in which Terry O'Quinn keeps himself nice and clean.

There are a few West Coasters that are still fitting in more viewings tonight, so I'll be posting the results in the morning. (Mountain time, which in domino time is never.)

Many thanks to everyone for your participation in this latest round of the lists project! I'll be releasing the results shortly in the next three posts. Here again is a guide to what the figures listed after each film represent, each separated with a slash mark:

1. Total points (50 for each #1 placement, 49 for each #2, etc.)
2. Number of lists the film appeared on (out of 34 submitted). If the film appeared in anyone's top 10, the number of top 10 appearances is also denoted in parentheses.
3. Highest placement of the film on any one list. If more than one person ranked the film this high, this is also denoted in parentheses.
4. Change in position from the 2008 list, with movements of 10 or more highlighted.

So for example, the 270/11(3)/5(x2)/+3 shown for The Thing means that it scored 270 points and appeared on eleven lists (and three top 10s), with two people ranking it as high as #5. The film also moved up three positions from its placement on the 2008 list.

For the list of orphans, only figure #3 is displayed (the highest rank, not the score given).

If anyone would like me to PM them a list of how all of their picks fared in the overall tally (rather than having to scour through all of the results) it's a simple thing for me to do. Just let me know.

I'll unlock the 1990s thread in the next day or so. In the meantime, feel free to continue discussion in this thread regarding the results of the 1980s project and to share your individual lists (including defenses of your poor-faring favorites). But in doing so, please keep in mind this thing that I wrote for a prior project, which more or less still applies:
As for the list being safe, that's only true perhaps if you refuse to look beyond the top 100 films. If you're familiar with the law of large numbers, it's inevitable that when you start compiling upwards of 30 lists, it's going to start to look pretty homogenized. We had 34 lists submitted this time. There were 29 last time, and I'm guessing 20-23 the first time. For the first iteration of the list in 2005, a film had to have just 64 points to make the top 100. The top 86 also-rans this time have at least that many points. At various points in the tabulation process, many of those films were included in the top 100. But when you add enough other lists, these films start to get replaced by films that we're generally all familiar with, and that a relatively large number of people like, but few enough to place them terribly high on their lists. I think the most interesting picks are the ones that have very strong support from just two or three people, but two or three voters can only give out so many points, and these films are always going to have a difficult time making the top 100 as long as more than 30 people are voting. I've actually looked back at the results of various lists and it's pretty consistent that the number of points a film will need to make the top 100 is close to 3.5 times the number of people participating.

Honestly, when I'm compiling, there are generally very few lists submitted that are strictly composed of mainstream, safe choices. And even if someone were to submit a list that was like 49 of every mainstream, obvious movie that I hate plus one film that I only came to know of and treasure because of their recommendation during this project, I would be glad that that person participated.

03 My Dinner With Andre
04 Broadcast News
05 Modern Romance
06 Do the Right Thing

My Top 10:
1. The Shining (1980, Stanley Kubrick)
2. Grave of the Fireflies (1988, Isao Takahata)
3. Blow Out (1981, Brian De Palma)
4. Hairspray (1988, John Waters)
5. Do the Right Thing (1989, Spike Lee)
6. Ms. 45 (1981, Abel Ferrara)
7. Return to Oz (1985, Walter Murch) ALSO ORPHAN
8. The Terminator (1984, James Cameron)
9. Blue Velvet (1986, David Lynch)
10. Akira (1988, Katsuhiro Otomo)

Orphans:
12. The Evil Dead (1981, Sam Raimi)
13. Barefoot Gen 2 (1986, Toshiro Hirata & Akio Sakai)
15. The Fog (1980, John Carpenter)
34. Never Cry Wolf (1983, Carroll Ballard)
35. Time Bandits (1981, Terry Gilliam)

48. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986, Hayao Miyazaki)
49. DreamChild (1985, Gavin Millar)
50. Vice Squad (1982, Gary Sherman)

For my first time participating in a list project, this was really fun. I watched about 30 new movies for this project, 10 of which made my final list. My taste ultimately swayed much more toward fantasy, horror and sci-fi. The biggest viewing surprises for me were Ms. 45, which I'm happy to see snuck onto the list, and Barefoot Gen 2. If we do revisit this decade a few years down the road, I'll have to give that the latter a bigger push.

Thanks to Swo for his hard work in preparing this!

Every list, I forget to include a film and this time it was The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On. (Did zedz submit a list? I guess we'll soon find out.) Yesterday, I was rushing back and forth between my "favorite movies" shelves—yes, they're segregated from the rest—and simply forgot to put that one into my list. It's a totally unique documentary, shame to see it orphaned.

Surprising to see Koyaanisqatsi become an also-ran this time, even with impressive Criterion and Arrow releases out (I probably should've voted for it), and Time Bandits orphaned even with the nice Arrow release. Sometimes it seems like a better release gives films a boost in the next round of the lists, sometimes not, but in any case I thought those films both had quite a few fans.

Yes, definitely, even though Gregory's post about the recent Arrow releases seems to contradict it. But the MoC release must have helped Rivette's "Pont du nord" a lot. On the other hand, the drastic drop of "La bande des quatre" is pretty inexplicable to me.

I'm also quite happy to see that at least one Ottinger film, "Johanna d'arc of Mongolia", has made the list, and that with only three people voting for it (and no, I wasn't the one who put it on first place of his list). The same for Ottinger's "Dorian Gray": only three people had it on their list, with two of them ranking it Top 10.

I guess this is another good example how much commercial availability has an influence on the listmaking in general, and how important it is to try to use the backchannels to get a more complete picture. This is probably less important for the coming lists, as far fewer (great) films from the 1990s onwards are missing commercial releases, but the issue will certainly come up again when we enter Vol.4, especially the 20s and 30s, I guess.

Yes, thanks, Swo. Any chance of unlocking that 90s thread?
