For my part, I didn’t get to watch Funeral Parade of Roses because UNCW’s copy was checked out when I dropped by last week! I’ll try to see it before the full ‘60s deadline. (And yes, I know I could probably have tracked it down online, but I like going to the library and getting discs for these projects. It just feels more fun.)

The 1969 Mini-List

I didn’t vote because I didn’t feel I had seen enough from this year, but I have seen the top ten. I guess if I’d have had any impact it would have been to keep Une Femme Douce from being an orphan. That’s top ten Bresson!

I could have used the support.

Top 10 out of 13. I don’t know if that’s saying that much! :D

But then again he’s pretty consistently spectacular.

thank you swo once again. genuinely shocked The Cremator was almost our second Czech #1, can't believe we voted it ahead of many of these titles. it's obviously way deserving of it, and a film I can't praise enough. this was a solid year overall, truly only 1967 was pretty weak, I was pleased with the rest! basically everything was new to me here, I promise for the 1970s project I'll try and be better about writing the titles up in advance, and still intend to cover these below.

new for 1969 project, new for 1960s project, *-revisited for 1969 project

20 Czech Rhapsody
19 The Color of Armenian Land
18 Salesman
17 Kevade (Spring)
16 Katzelmacher
15 Otley
14 Putney Swope
13 I Start Counting!
12 Love is Colder Than Death
11 A Passion
10 Satyricon
09 Sirokko (Winter Wind)
08 Grazuole (The Beauty)
07 The Milky Way
06 Larks on a String
05 The Color of Pomegranates
04 All My Good Countrymen
03 Midnight Cowboy
02 The Cremator
01 Z*

Los Desafíos is a really good omnibus with three stories about the American-Spanish relationship. I assume most who seek it out are like me and do so for the Erice which is excellent and strange, but the other two segments are good as well. The second might actually be my favorite. It plays out as a cruel joke on patriarchal aspects of the competing cultures that remind me of Juan Rulfo.
