Remaining people: leave Blue Velvet off of your lists!
Fanny and Alexander is an overrated dog. You should all be ashamed of yourselves and resubmit your lists with A nous amours at the top.
I take it this is your broadside directed at me for my swipe at Blue Velvet??

I still have capsules to write for the rest of the bartered films (and a few others), but rest assured that everyone who traded with me got their films watched and considered for the list and I'll get around to writing about them presently
I'm keen on seeing how successful your campaign for "They All Laughed" was.
I think I might have seen it years ago but I couldn't remember enough about it or get to see it this time.
I always enjoy Ben Gazzara and then he did great work on 'Saint Jack' for Bogdanovich.

Did anyone vote for Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story? That's ranked high on my 80s list.

I was just surmising that it's Fanny in the top stop. I like both films well enough but neither made my list.

I love Haynes, but I have only seen part of Superstar on a bad internet stream. I imagine that lack of availability is killing its chances.

But if it's any consolation, I will be giving a high vote to Safe on the 90s list this summer.

In hindsight, my biggest regret is only including one Chevy Chase film

His cameo in Caddyshack II wasn't enough to put you over on that film?

My biggest regret is that I was only able to pick two big action movies -- Die Hard and Escape from New York -- and one teen sex comedy -- Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Because in retrospect, weren't the '80s really all about those two genres?

I really intended to watch a lot of those cheesy 80s movies, the VHS covers of which I I remember fondly from my childhood spent walking around the aisles of low-rent video rental places, but it just never happened. The one thing about this project is that no matter how far away the deadline, there's always fifty more films I wished I could've seen

And though I have fond memories of Funny Farm, my vote went to Fletch 8-)

I also voted for Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story. I know where it's available on disc, so anyone interested in obtaining it feel free to PM me. It really is an excellent film.

Blue Velvet didn't quite make my list
(it was in my shortlist of 100 or so, though)

Some stats:
35 people voted
574 different films were nominated
289 were nominated by more than one person and therefore eligible for the final list
Some more facts and figures in a few days maybe.

In the meantime, you can defend you darlings in the usual place and I'll set up a 90s comments thread (already requested by some eager beavers)

Ack, please don't quote a post that big when we know what you're referring to!

Interesting list. I knew Fanny would be Number One, but that margin is a lot bigger than I anticipated. 68 with 178 (128 of those not from me) was a very respectable placement for my pet project, thanks everyone who took the challenge! Eight of my top ten made the final list and the other two titles were also-rans, which is a big victory in my book.

Favourite Directors

A very boring exercise this time, with very few filmmakers splitting their support over multiple films (or, in a couple of cases of such, notably Rohmer and Svankmajer, not reaching any particular critical mass as a consequence).

The only major splitting of support was for Woody Allen, ten films of whose were nominated (plus New York Stories, not included in the tally below). The other front runners were mostly down to obvious support for one or two obvious films. Here's the top 5 anyway:

Woody Allen (10 films, 1771 points)
Martin Scorsese (4 films, 1421 points)
Rainer Werner Fassbinder (4 films, 1152 points)
Ingmar Bergman (3 films, 1027 points)
David Cronenberg (5 films, 967 points)

While three of my top 10 films didn't even make the also-rans (I expected as much from the unavailable Manoel and Moon, but I'd figure Merry-Go-Round would make the cut before Pont du Nord), six of them made the final list, and two made the top 10. Only Horse Thief, a film I figured would have been a lock for the list, was stuck in purgatory.

Let the thrashing and defending (and regretful sighs of forgetfulness) commence!

Oh let me start working through these capsules I owe:

the Verdict Mamet hadn't quite found his footing yet as a screenwriter but Newman excels in this small film. Rampling's character is so transparent that were the film twenty minutes shorter and all her scenes excised, it would have not been hurt one bit and helped plenty. Best part was hearing James Mason say "Bullshit."

Blow Out A conflicting response from me on this one. De Palma is clearly having the time of his life here, and his infectious energy is shown in the framings and use of bright colors. But for a film devoted to sound, the picture rarely indulges in aural pleasures. Perhaps that's what makes the best scenes the opening and the scene where Travolta plays all the magnetized tapes simultaneously. For a man who worships Hitchcock, De Palma blows it in the last act by setting up the perfect chase: A woman wired for sound and an expert sound tech trying to chase her down using only aural clues. But then he picks up only on sounds any shmoe could have figured out (Fireworks!) and inexplicably drives his car through a parade (Though this fits in with the footage he hoards as well, which so clearly shows the gun blast that it's absurd). True, the finale in front of the flag is gorgeous (one of the few times I've found fireworks beautiful), but the elements were there for this to be so much more. I thought making Lithgow a lone wolf conspirator was an interesting approach and Franz pretty much walked away with the film whenever he was on screen. I hissed at the jokey ending. A mixed bag, ultimately.

Cutter's Way Did every actor drink a big glass of milk before each take? Every character sounds to be in mid-cough and that's the least of the film's troubles. I'm okay with loathsome and inept characters, but when they're presented with a total lack of anything approaching charisma or any other mechanism to hang interest on, the whole project turns into an abrasive mess. To be honest, I still really want to see the film Cold Bishop saw, because his write up is terrific and regrettably, the film wasn't. I did like the golden hue cinematography and it's not every day you get to see John Heard ride a horse one-handed, but still.

If it's any consolation, it ended in my bottom 10 by the time I was done arranging my list. I probably could of figured out something else, but everything was either A) MIA B) I'm certain you already seen it, or C) so far down the list, that choosing a single "favorite" was arbitrary. I honed on the conspiracy film aspect, and basically decided "What the hell? Maybe he'll like it." I do hope you track down some of the other films I mentioned, or that are bound to pop up in the Darlings thread.
