Still, it seems that the PQ is plagued with various other issues outside of color registration, such that the end look isn't enticing at all. From what the caps look like, it almost makes the whole point of releasing it on BD moot because the material barely seems worth it.

The DVD Beaver review doesn't compare it against the Universal, and doesn't mention if it's completely free of registration issues. (One of the frame grabs does look like it might have a very slight registration issue, and another shows that not all damage has been cleaned up, so it's not 100% perfect.)

It does at least have the overture and intermission FWIW.

Universal has been consistently releases 4-6 catalog titles every 3 months or so for a while now, which is pretty great. (This is in addition to licensing titles to Criterion, Kino, Shout Factory, Arrow, etc.)

Here are the recently announced titles for Feb 5, 2019:

A Countess from Hong Kong (1967)
Greedy (1994)
Heart and Souls (1993)
In Good Company (2004)
Shadowlands (1993)

In Good Company is one of the few remaining HD-DVD releases that they had not released on BD yet.

I only remember In Good Company for having that ten minute long Iron and Wine song on the soundtrack

Seems they are also wrapping up the releases for the DreamWorks Animation back catalog on 6/4/16 with the releases of Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2004), Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), and Flushed Away (2006).

8/13/19

Fierce Creatures (1997)
Leave It to Beaver (1997)
Radioland Murders (1994)
Undercover Brother (2002)

Fierce Creatures and Leave It to Beaver were only 1.33 on DVD in the US, I believe.

Personally, Undercover Brother is a favorite of mine, so I'm pretty happy about it finally getting a BD upgrade. Hopefully the transfer source isn't simply the same one from the original DVD release.

Fierce Creatures finally got an OAR reissue in 2011, but they snuck it out in on one of those bargain-bin multi-film packs and it was still non-anamorphic; my guess is they dug out the master for the widescreen laserdisc. Would be nice if we finally got the original ending, but who am I kidding?

Frustrated that we're running out of movies for a possible Brian Levant Criterion boxset

Is that alternate ending true? I heard about it back in the day. As a big fan of Wanda I was always largely let down by this one, but the ending (as I heard it) would have helped a lot.

It's absolutely true, it was test-screened and everything. It's why the movie had two directors (Robert Young wasn't available for the reshoots, so Fred Schepisi came in instead) and was delayed over half a year. There's a detailed contemporary account here. The only public release of the discarded footage is the original teaser, which includes a moment with Kevin Kline and a rhino that would've been a pretty big spoiler if they hadn't made the changes (and which I remember watching repeatedly via a super-low-res Quicktime download!).

The 4k restoration of the 1932 Scarface is included on BD in the upcoming 4k 1983 Scarface release, but only, it seems, in the special edition that also includes a giant "collectible" statue:

I cannot look at that gaudy statue without imagining its only purpose as being used as the blunt object murder weapon in some sort of Agatha Christie adaptation! ("He just would not stop talking about how the 1980s Scarface film inspired him in his rap career, so I just grabbed the first thing that came to hand on the shelf, officer! It was self defence really!")

Much prefer the more low key monogrammed money clip that came with the deluxe DVD set back in the day!

I’ve only found reference to a Blu-ray of the 1932 Scarface being included, but nothing about it being a 4K restoration. In any case, I doubt that this will be the only way to get the 1932 film on Blu.

The 1983 Scarface is an OTT takedown of capitalism, with Pacino as Wyle E. Coyote with a no-limit Acme credit card. Every special edition of this film includes gold-plated aspirational bullshit tchotchkes. How come physical media culture has to die, but MTV Cribs accessorizing lives on?

Ah, you're right. I thought I'd seen it mentioned, but I guess I misread. Still, since the 1932 version is getting upgraded to BD from DVD in a previous package, I'm assuming the 4k restoration I've seen elsewhere credited to NBCUniversal will be used, though most of those pages have gone awol or only mention it in passing:
https://www.universalstudioslot.com/new ... tival-2019
http://www.the-reel-thing.co/wp-content ... am-Web.pdf (page 23)

Seems unlikely they would leave the restoration on the shelf while upgrading a DVD to an an SD upscale on BD. And I meant to point out that the non-special edition 4k UHD and BD-only releases of the 1983 4k restoration do not include the 1932 version, on BD or DVD. I certainly hope that means the 1932 version is getting a standalone.

If Scarface (1932) is only included in the gift set of the 1983 film, I can see them releasing it individually as part of their MOD line down the road.

I suspect this title is top of the list for all of the boutique labels with relationships with Universal. We'll surely see it from someone, though I agree, it could just as easily come from Universal themselves (remember the initial DVD was also originally only available bundled with the de Palma movie)
