Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I suspect it's because it's one of their best DVD sellers since they started the Warner Archive

But why would it be? It's not a very popular movie, is it?captveg wrote:I suspect it's because it's one of their best DVD sellers since they started the Warner Archive
Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
Y'all know that The Rock is making a Doc Savage movie with Shane Black, right?

That, and if we've learned anything from Shout Factory, Twilight Time, Code Red, Synapse, etc. it''s that titles with cult followings are the best sellers.

That's one of the few tolerable Neil Simon movies at least

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I don't know - it's been a while since I've seen it, but I do remember cringing at quite a bit of it, the worst being Dreyfuss's cartoonish lisp in what was a very dated comedic bit.
Happy about It's Always Fair Weather though! Perfect choice too, I saw it projected at Lincoln Center - it really needs an HD release for the CinemaScope alone. (Just be warned the last shot is going to look like crap because they clearly blew up a very small section of the negative to create something resembling a medium shot from a very long distance.) Gene Kelly's roller skating scene is a marvel - I don't think most people outside of cinephiles know about it, and it never fails to get a huge response when I show it to someone.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
No argument there, the flamboyantly gay Richard II is terrible and hasn't aged well, but otherwise I find Dreyfuss his usual self (and all that entails on either side of the argument). I caught a bit of it on TCM again recently and it's still got a certain sitcomy charm. I'll probably upgrade when it's on salehearthesilence wrote:I don't know - it's been a while since I've seen it, but I do remember cringing at quite a bit of it, the worst being Dreyfuss's cartoonish lisp in what was a very dated comedic bit.
It's Always Fair Weather has one of my all time favorite musical numbers, the 1-2 of "Stillman's Gym" and "Baby You Knock Me Out"-- one of those numbers I can watch over and over. The whole movie's great, though. The more I see Dan Dailey in things, the more I'm convinced he's one of the great unsung talents in film musical history. He is in so many great musicals, with this probably being his most well-known.

It's Always Fair Weather looks like Silk Stockings, solid HD presentation of what we already had in SD on the DVD. I actually give props to WA for releasing these great musicals even though they haven't had extra work done, as no genre is better suited to upgrades regardless!

Holy cow! I half-wished that Criterion would pick up Bad Day at Black Rock to add the John Sturges commentary as I expected Warner Bros. to never put this out, but I'm quite excited to hear about this one. I'm sure that ultra wide frame is going to look phenomenal in HD. I'll still be hanging on to my laserdisc, though!

Baller announcements. Sounds like they've straightened out their weird upgrade priorities

I loved the weird upgrades. Who else would give a damn about Body Snatchers and Showdown in Little Tokyo? And this was still in between the wonderful Ford, Hawks, Ray and Tourneur upgrades.domino harvey wrote:Baller announcements. Sounds like they've straightened out their weird upgrade priorities

I give them props for the bonkers Susan Slept Here upgrade, but that's about as far as I can go down the positive road on their bizarre left field titles

I fully expect more random upgrades to occur. IMO, they seem to be on a rotation of sorts: classic Hollywood dramas, contemporary (1970+) cult films, classic Hollywood musicals, contemporary horror films, and so on.domino harvey wrote:Baller announcements.
