I for one am overjoyed that Warners has decided to release the Looney Tunes sets. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to have them all in one place. Hopefully with the release of more sets, it'll come true.

One quick note, people complained about this DVD on Amazon, like I needed better restoration. After seeing it, I can see why they would say that, but also how they were wrong: these shorts have a lot of 'junk' in them, everything from lint to the occasional hair with tons of particle matter. It's not anything that's introduced in the transfer or the making of the DVD, it's in the cartoon itself, something that's been verified in comparison to both old video copies and actual film prints.

I always heard that Termite Terrace was a CHEAP, CHEAP place, and I'm guessing the production was dirt cheap, too, meaning little time or care was taken in shooting these films cleanly (wiping the crap out of the cells, the camera, etc.), which were produced on a tight-fisted schedule.

Otherwise, these DVDs look GREAT, IMO.

In the laserdisc days, weren't all the toons released in one huge set? They should've done that, but then again, they get more money the way they are doing it now.

I've been wanting to get these sets, but I have one question before getting them. Are they the uncensored toons, or the bastardized T.V. ones?

What do you mean? How uncensored could they get? What might've been cut?

I myself have always hoped that some of the propaganda toons from the WWII days would show up. You know, the really racist ones.......

Well, when I was a kid they went into the process of removing violence from classic cartoons (Disney and Warner Bros.). I remember one where Bugs Bunny puts a gun to his head, and they cut it off for T.V., or a Donald Duck cartoon where Donald would put a gun in front of a penguins face, and they cut it.

I was afraid they would be the cut versions, but it seems like a no.

Turn on the TV. They cut out gunshots (now replaced with a freeze-frame of a different, 'safe' shot, usually a reaction from a secondary character, while you hear the gunshot), politically incorrect gags (blackface, occasionally Native American caricatures), etc.

Oh yeah, these are uncensored. If you want a list of censored WB cartoons, there are websites that document them. They've been cutting stuff for a long time (going back to an audio overdub in Bugs' first cartoon, which made a reference to Carole Lombard who died tragically after initial screenings), but in recent years, it's multiplied quite a bit.

There were a number of different LaserDisc releases. You're probably thinking of the Golden Age of Looney Tunes 5-disc box set released by MGM, that included virtually all the pre-1949 color cartoons (all except for the so-called "Censored 11" that had too much racially-charged content). MGM didn't have the rights to the post-1949 'toons; Warner did, and though they released a number of discs they did not do so systematically.

One of the really exciting things about these DVD sets is that, because of the merger between Time Warner and Turner (who owned MGM), the pre-1949 and the post-1949 cartoons are able to be presented together for the first time- ever! (who'da thunk I'd be cheering for a corporate merger?)

As for cut cartoons, a good example is the Scarlet Pumpernickel which ends with Daffy Duck shooting himself in the head. Censored on TV, not on the DVD. No, they're doing a good job maintaining their commitment to presenting them in their original versions.

Actually MGM released five volumes in their Looney Tunes series, as well as a Tex Avery box.

Me, I'm just praying for a legit release someday of "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs."

Consider it trivia or a request for help, but I'm looking for the titles of three Looney Toon classics and wonder if they have been released on DVD yet. I haven't seen these in 20 years so my recollection may seem vague but those who grew up with these cartoons will probably at least somewhat recall them. Titles anyone?

First, there is the one that is dominated by a Dali-eque landscape. Can't remember who the character lead was, perhaps Bugs. There is a brief appearance of a "Rubber Band", a musical marching band of rubber bands. That's all I remember.

Second, there's a haunted house with Porky and Sylvester. Quite disturbing when I was young, which is why I want to find that one especially. Porky is trying to get a good night sleep while Sylvester is being tormented by angry spirits...if I recall a couple of mischievous mice.

Third, Daffy is adopted by a father and daughter as a cute little duckling...only to grow into an obnoxious family member. Fav scene: at the breakfast table telling stories at high volume while buttering his toast all the while dad looks on with grim consternation. Daffy notices and mirrors that angry look. Scene kills me.

I think I want to find these because as far as I can tell these three really seemed pretty mature compared to some of the others. Any recollections? Ring a bell?

Sorry if this should belong in another thread.

The character in the surreal world was Porky. The one with the rubber bands is Dough for the Do-Do, but it was actually a color remake of the classic Porky in Wackyland. Dough for the Do-Do is available in the Volume 1 set, and Porky in Wackyland is on Volume 2.

Scaredy Cat is the Porky and Sylvester pairing, and it is also available on Volume 1.

Unfortunately, the hilarious Nasty Quacks hasn't been released on DVD yet.

I thought I'd bring up the issue of whether Warner used digital video noise reduction improperly on the Looney Tunes sets. I remember seeing quite a few instances where the digital process seemed to distort the drawings, but I'm not an expert on the technical stuff. There's some discussion and links about it on this site a little more than halfway down under a large picture of Tweety.

Volume Three is on its way. You can find the list of included shorts in the first post of this thread.

From DVD Times:

[quote]Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Looney Tunes: Golden Collection Vol. 3 for 25th October 2005 priced at $64.92 SRP. On this 4-disc set are 60 more of the most "looneytic" Looney Tunes ever unleashed on rabbit, duck, pig or humanity. Indeed, some have never before been on home video and for this collection have been fully restored and remastered, presented completely uncut and uncensored earning this set a “May Not Be Suitable for Childrenâ€

Just for the record: I had never seen "Daffy Duck in Hollywood" until just now (volume 3), and I think it is totally brilliant. Cheers to WB for these collections.

Today I noticed something that really disapointed and annoyed the hell out of me and my girlfriend, while watching the short "The Three Little Bops". My girlfriend asked to turned the Spanish audio on the short, and the dialogue was changed drastically from its original Spanish version, since the new audio now has different voice actors and makes references to Luis Miguel (Mexican singer, fomer boyfriend of Mariah Carey) and Big Brother, which is a huge hit on Mexican TV. I found this tweaking of the track very disrespectful, since this would be similar to the English track of a 1950's cartoon being updated with references to Britney Spears and Survivor, so it will attract the newer generations. And I know that this tweaking was completely unnecesary since I saw this same short last week on our local Telemundo and it had the original Spanish audio track.

Thinking that this was an isolated situation of one short having and updated dubbing, I began checking the rest of the episodes and poof.... All of the shorts have updated Spanish dialogue, making recent pop culture references along the way. I thought that this Golden Collection was supposed to be a preservation of these culture icons and their legacy, but it seems that WB forgot its Spanish speaking adult fans and decided that an updated dubbing was necessary for no reason whatsoever. I'm going to email WB to know why they did this, but I believe that they should restore the original Spanish dubbing to all this shorts, to preserve their original form.

I remember seeing quite a few instances where the digital process seemed to distort the drawings, but I'm not an expert on the technical stuff. There's some discussion and links about it on this site a little more than halfway down under a large picture of Tweety.
This is pretty damning stuff. A crying shame.

TV Shows on DVD has the first scoop on what always ends up being my favorite DVD release of the year. I'll put the full specs and list of shorts in the first post of this thread once they are announced.
In this 4-disc set are 60 more of the most looneytic Looney Tunes cartoons ever conceived! Each disc is devoted to a theme or character that features fan favorites plus some rarities. Disc 1 showcases the long-eared star extraordin-hare with 15 Bugs Bunny cartoons, including 1958's Oscar-winning Best Cartoon Short Subject Knighty Knight Bugs. Disc 2 (Porky Pig) celebrates animation legend Frank Tashlin, who brought a filmmaker's eye for angles, editing and style to his creations. Disc 3 zips along pronto with fast-acting Speedy Gonzales and includes Tabasco Road, Mexicali Shmoes and Pied Piper of Guadalupe, all of which were nominated for Academy Awards. And cats may have 9 lives but they also have 15 cartoons in Disc 4's batch of feline follies. The fur's gonna fly.

Fans of the Looney Tunes sets know that they're always announced around this time, so we've been getting emails over the past few days asking "when will we hear about Volume 4?!?" Well, this would be your answer! The 4-DVD set will include 60 classic shorts, fully remastered and uncut. Special features will include documentaries, "Behind the Tunes" featurettes, commentaries, music only tracks, selections from the vault and other rare shorts. The set will cost $64.92 when it's released on November 14.

Warner Bros will also release the "Spotlight Collection Volume 4" on the same day. This 2 disc set will contain 28 classic cartoons (all of which will also be found on The Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 4) and carries a $26.99 suggested retail price.

A whole disc of Tashlin Porky Pig cartoons? I'm doubtful, but ecstatic!

My understanding from some cartoon dorks in the know is that the second disc will be ALL Tashlin - and not just the Porky stuff either. We'll see. I like Tashlin's Daffy a lot. Nasty Quacks is hilarious.

I haven't been following these releases as accurately as I should but is this a first for Speedy Gonzalez cartoons? I love that character!

Volume 1 featured the short Speedy Gonzales and a "Behind-the-Tunes" featurette on him. Volume 3 featured Gonzales Tamales. I'm not a huge Speedy fan, but I like The Pied Piper of Guadalupe a lot. I'm just hoping that they don't include too many of his mid-sixties pairings with Daffy. Blech!

Well, that's even better. I was a little confused since the original blurb seemed to indicate that each disc was devoted to a single theme or character, and then said that disc two was Porky as well as a celebration of Tashlin. 2006 is really turning out to be Tash's year.

I guess I'll start praying for "Plane Daffy" right now.
