I'm not sure if it has been posted somewhere already but it appears that French company Bach Films will be releasing Greed, The Crowd. and The Wind on September 16th.

Basically great about "Greed", but at 125 min. it's the release version, not the restored version, even though the second disc promises to have "deleted scenes". Would be interesting to see whether "The Wind" is better than the Spanish dvd, and I hope "The Crowd" is at least as good as the version aired on TCM.

I thought there were no 'deleted scenes' extant for Greed, just lots and lots of stills? Since they wouldn't make much sense outside the context of the 'restoration', maybe that assemblage will appear on the second disc.

I actually find the 'restoration' of the film quite problematic, as the stills are no substitute for the missing footage and publicity stills are decidedly not representative of von Stroheim's mise en scene. Still, it's better than nothing, and the 'restoration' (it's actually more like the blueprint for a restoration) works fine as an argument that the integral Greed was once a masterpiece, even though it's no masterpiece in its own right.

I may need to pick up The Crowd as Warner seems to want to try and see how The Big Parade does on Blu-ray before seeing how they'll go about releasing it. I can always upgrade it if by some miracle WB puts it out on Blu.

Looks that way because it's the next project in the FWMS restoration queue, see today's announcement in German: http://www.murnau-stiftung.de/node/1178" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Well, given their recent practise, I would guess they plan to debut it on Berlinale 2015, so that means that we'll probably have to wait two years before it gets released on dvd. Very good news nevertheless, of course.

That's some of the most thrilling news to ever come out in the realm of silent film on home video . . . the importance of Freund's work in this film cannot be overstated, and the importance of this film as an artistic, influential whole cannot be overstated.

It's wholly fitting that it's FWMS polishing this thing because frankly nobody took more from this film than Murnau himself. I can't prove any of what I'm about to say beyond my inner voice, but I see Variete stamped all over Murnau's work for Fox (which came right on the heels of Variete's release, more or less). . . there's a look, for example, that George O'Brien gives Janet Gaynor in Sunrise that is lifted straight from
SpoilerShow
the murder scene
in Variete. Jannings at the end of Variete, like a man posessed, cocks his chin down and glares levelly and menacingly with burning eyeballs in a held closeup at his
SpoilerShow
victim
prior to
SpoilerShow
committing murder.
George O'Brien, in the boat, rises and midlessly begins to advance on Gaynor in precisely the same fashion with the exact same, extraordinarily sinister held closeup. There's nothing else in the cinema of the contemporary age like these shots, save for perhaps Karloff's calmly evil fullscreen glare in The Mummy.

And of course one could go on for weeks about the influence of Variete on Four Devils . . . an acrobatic camera taking advantage of the hi-wire act of its trapeze subjects. Reading the script and viewing the storyboards, Variete is written all over 4Devils in terms of both content and execution. It's almost like Murnau wanted to (re)make the film himself.

Notwithstanding all of this, I am so pleased to note that there are (probably) 35mm elements in existence for this title. I always thought that the grotty 16's we all have been subsisting on were more or less what survived. But as I've recently discovered that there have been glorious 35's of von Gerlach's Vanina being projected all along beyond my fuzzy blue tinted copy, there are lots of surprises out there.

Well, there definitely were about eighteen years ago, when I saw a fine archival 35mm print of the film.

Love One Another + The Bride of Glomdal (Dreyer, 1922 + 1926) are out via DFI.
Fante-Anne (Rasmus Breistein, 1920) is out via NFI.

Both releases recommended.

Thanks, I've made those updates. Fante-Anne is on the list swo provided, but the other two are not. A good list, but unfortunately not a resource for finding out what silents may be "hidden" as supplements on feature discs. The BFI seems to do this a lot.

I'm pretty sure the 1925 version of Ben Hur is on the 3-disc blu-ray of the 1959 release. All assuming that third disc is actually a blu and not a DVD.

Eddie, perhaps you can add the formats to the list of films?

The '25 version of Ben Hur is indeed on the 3rd disc, and it is a Blu-ray, but it's in SD. Unlike '23 The Ten Commandments which is in full 1080p on disc 3 of the later Ten Commandments Blu.

I've updated the list with Criterion's new Lloyd announcement.

Formats? They're all Blu-ray, the point of the list. Is that what you mean by format?

Sorry Eddie. I got it confused with a list that was posted earlier. And of course I neglected to read the top of your post.

You can see a picture of the rear of the case here, and it appears that it is indeed english friendly.

Are any of the German Chaplin BDs of films not yet released by Criterion or Park Circus?

Updated to add the Eisenstein, plus Hitchcock's Downhill, recently released by the same folks in Spain.

As for the different localised versions, I think it's best to just include U.S. and U.K. labels for simplicity's sake, unless there is neither.

Sadly, those "folks" (Divisa) are quite sloppy / bodged with serious mistakes in most of their releases. I read that the Eisenstein is just a blowed up DVD.
