I'm just sick of the "funny" Season 2 pairings I see on Twitter all the time.

You do get that the people who make the show aren't responsible for those, right? Maybe redirect your hatred of internet memes away from the entertainment they're based on...

Fair enough. But in all honesty I wonder what will happen if next season is subpar. "The secret occult history of the United States transportation system" is all we know about it so far, and it seems a little far-fetched.

And if I'm wrong I'll gladly eat my words on it.

"The secret occult history of the religious schools of south Louisiana" doesn't exactly inspire confidence either, but they did pretty well with it in season one.

Polanski did alright with the secret occult history of the Los Angeles water utility.

I don't know if anyone is aware of this factoid; but Alejandro González Iñárritu was originally slated to direct True Detective but dropped out late in the development process and was replaced by Cary Fukunaga. A major upgrade. (IMO)

That could be a great fit seeing as how he just made the best film of his long career only a few years ago

And he's no stranger to television either. My dream choice would have been Rian Johnson but he's quite busy obviously.

To Live and Die in L.A. is one of the better uses of the city in popular cinema, so it would be great to see another vision of Los Angeles from Freidkin, especially one that was free of the time constraints of a feature length film.

It would also be great if Friedkin was able to direct the entire season, although Pizzolatto has already stated that more than one director is likely for the second season.

I hope that's not the case. Because the consistency of vision and tone from a single director is one of the more interesting and fully successful aspects of the the show's first season. If anything, True Detective could use a couple more writers -- even if they were more like friends in a room hanging out, co-thinkers or co-plotters to bounce ideas off of in the manner of David Milch's Deadwood collaborators, or the way that Louis C.K. used Steven Wright to help talk through his current season or the way that South Park pretty much always does it now.

I read that there will be four leads for S2 today.

And before anybody starts in -- at least about Farrell -- I'll happily cast my vote for him as seriously underrated and with more apparent potential than, say, McConaughey himself had before the last few years of his amazing reinvention.

The article dom linked said that's not true, there'll be only 3.

I'm disappointed. I was hoping for all the leads to be female.

I'm disappointed. I was hoping for all the leads to be not Vince Vaughn.

Colin Farrell did good work in In Bruges, and considering that Matthew McConaughey had a record of interesting performances about that lengthy before Bernie/Killer Joe kicked off his career resurgence, I have the same optimism for Farrell. Vince Vaughn has only ever really shown one speed, and it works well (or, worked well 10 years ago) in some comedies, but I can't really see how he'll translate to this. I try not to think about the Psycho remake, but I vaguely remember him being pretty awful in that.

Colin Farrell, much like Jake Gyllenhall, has developed much more gravitas and credibility as a leading man since the spotlight has crept away from him. Vaughan, on the other hand, has seemingly squandered any flashes of dramatic talent he may have once shown.

I'm worried this show will end up becoming "Super Dramatic Comeback Hour" but if they can nab Friedkin for a whole season, I wouldn't worry too much about the cast.

Vaughn was excellent in the superb, underrated Return to Paradise. Farrell meanwhile has been great in many things not excluding his much derided turn in Alexander. Even Phone Booth was a masterful depiction of barely controlled hysteria and desperation.

In addition to Vaughn, Elisabeth Moss is also in talks to star (an exciting, inspired choice if she gets the role).
