Day of the Triffids

#1 Post by LavaLamp » Fri Jan 31, 2014 1:58 pm

A while back, I read Day of the Triffids (John Wyndham, 1951). This was an excellent sci-fi novel, and had a lot of detail - the sense of a post-apocalyptic atmosphere was really well done here, and I was very caught up in the story.

I then re-watched the 1981 Day of the Triffids BBC mini-series, and was very impressed by how closely this followed the novel; many scenes, including the dialogue, were lifted right out of the book; this is definitely one of the most faithful filmed adaptations of a book I've ever seen. And, I didn't think the Triffid effects were that bad - Though they were definitely old-skool Dr. Who-ish, IMHO they were fairly menacing, and quite good given this was an early '80's BBC TV mini-series. IMHO the post-apocalyptic setting was quite believable here, and despite the show's low budget, I found it quite good.

Note that I was not that impressed by the American?! DOTT film (1962). Far inferior to the BBC mini-series, IMHO...
