Re: TV on DVD
Glad to see the features from the "Not Just the Best Of..." set carried over. I really hope that more commentaries were recorded for this set but I suppose I shouldn't hold my breath. Still an absolutely essential purchase.

Re: TV on DVD
I know how important it was to Shandling to have the entire series released, and how glum he was whilst putting the supplements together for the Best Of set due to the fact that HBO refused to continue to release sets of the show. They don't always put together the flashiest sets with the prettiest transfers, but thank goodness for Shout! Factory and their constant willingness to put stuff like this out there.

Re: TV on DVD
Just got The Larry Sanders Show Complete Series on DVD today. Whoa. This is one THICK set, as each season aside from 1 and 6 has two slimcases each, and the bonus disc gets its own (10 in all) plus there's a nice thick episode guide/essay booklet. All in a gorgeous, sturdy box. Can't wait to dig in.

Re: TV on DVD
Re: The Larry Sanders Show Complete Series: I love the show and I love Shout! Factory for putting this set out, but I have to say - they really need to hire some fucking restoration people. For a show that's only 15-20 years old, the video quality of this set is downright abysmal. I do not recall the Sony best-of set looking even remotely this terrible, and I have rewatched some of the episodes from that set (but I, admittedly, don't have that set anymore to do a direct comparison). Even if the source materials are in poor shape, there seems to have been absolutely no work put into scrubbing or restoring them whatsoever. My old XVID copies that were recorded off of Australian syndication look much better than the episodes in this set do (particularly in the earlier seasons).
Still, it is wonderful to have it. I just wish they'd put even an ounce of effort into the video quality, it's 2010 for goodness' sake.

The Not Just the Best Of set looked appalling too, as did the season one DVD. And I'm talking just awful. I really can't imagine that Shout's set is worse. I never saw the show during it's original run, so I can't say how it looked then, but I've always assumed that the DVDs looked so bad because Sony, et al. figured that the switch between the scenes shot on film and the scenes on video would now appear so jarring to audiences accustomed to HD video that they went with these low-rent transfers.

Re: TV on DVD
I assume going back and retransferring all of the film footage wasn't an option due to budget issues and projected sales and the sheer massive undertaking it would require for 89 episodes. It took so long for the whole series to come out because of poor sales of the first season. I'm grateful to finally have these as well, but yeah, they look terrible.

Re: TV on DVD
Thought I'd weigh in on Larry Sanders. It's true that the video quality is not good ... but it hasn't really been bothering me as I work through the set. I had a couple minutes at the beginning where I was, like, yeeesh - but then I got over it. Not sure it's worse than the prior releases ... but it's definitely not any better. Anyway, I don't regret buying it. Amazing show.
