Yeah, I can imagine, what with having to subtitle at least two conversations at once, right? It's a shame, though, I've always wanted to see MST3K. Maybe someday they'll be able to pull it offmfunk9786 wrote:They don't. To be fair, it'd be nearly impossible to subtitle in a legitimately workable way.

Re: TV on DVD
I hope so for your sake. I had a mostly-deaf roommate freshman year of college who was pretty annoyed with the lack of subtitles on MST3K releases and preferred that I didn't watch it if he was in the room.Anhedionisiac wrote:Yeah, I can imagine, what with having to subtitle at least two conversations at once, right? The big issue isn't the two conversations, it's mostly that the comedic timing would likely be lost if subtitles were applied. It'd be very difficult to replicate the experience of watching it with sound.

Re: TV on DVD
Mystery Science Theater The Movie (Universal DVD) is the only one with subtitles. The movie version wasn't as packed with riffs and dialogue so it was much easier to do I guess. But it is possible.

Re: TV on DVD
MST3k Vol XXII announced. It's going to be two Joels and two Mikes, Time of the Apes, Mighty Jack, The Violent Years, and The Brute Man.
Shout! actually bought a DVD of The Violent Years off me on Amazon a couple of weeks ago, which is kind of neat. I wonder if that means they'll be including the un MSTied movie along with the episode.

I love love love The Brute Man - one of the most underrated episodes ever.
By the way, why don't we have an all-emcompassing MST3K thread, mods? It seems like half of this thread is about MST3K releases.

We do but with this thread as the catch-all TV DVD thread it gets confusing.

Re: Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K)
If anyone's interested in checking out Cinematic Titanic- the project that pretty much everyone from MST that's not in Rifftrax is doing- they have a selection of 'scratch and dent' DVDs on their site for $3.99 each. (I guess 'scratch and dent' just means the covers got misprinted and doesn't affect the actual discs.)

I just can't get into Cinematic Titanic. I know it might be blasphemy, but I think that Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy were the comedic backbone of the show all along.

Re: Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K)
It's a lot more laid back that Rifftrax, it feels sort of like the KTMA episodes- I think Rifftrax got most of the killer material in the divorce, but Cinematic Titanic got the Minnesota charm.
It's also an incredibly fun live show (when there isn't a sound problem)

I rank Trace equal to them, but they were the reasons I really loved the show. I prefer Nelson as the human on the SOL and I always really loved his bumper segments when Joel was the host.

Re: Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K)
There's something about Mike that rubs me the wrong way after a while, though I'm still a fairly big fan of both Rifftrax and the later MST stuff- I think part of it is that he doesn't actually like movies all that much, and doesn't take them all that seriously as a medium. Kevin Murphy's probably the best on that front- if you ever read his book he's actually a fairly thoughtful viewer and critic.
I like Bill Corbett a lot, but I do think Trace Beaulieu was the most missed out of the original cast departures- if nothing else, he was a really excellent puppeteer, which is a skill I don't think anyone else on the show ever really developed.

Re: Mystery Science Theater 3000
I did not expect Corbett to replace Beaulieu so well. I still missed Trace, and I missed Crow doing his occasional Gregory Peck impression and yelling "kitty!" every time a lion or tiger popped up onscreen, but all in all, Crow didn't miss much of a beat.
This is all really splitting hairs for me because all MST3K is good MST3K.

Yeah, DVD Savant linked that this week- I'm really curious how watchable the movie will be when every shot doesn't look like someone's last known photo. It's too bad there really isn't any way to upgrade the print on the MST version- and that Shout! just rereleased it, so they'd be unlikely to want to put out another version this soon.

The film has its merits when watched on its own, if you can believe it. It's obviously bad, but "not bad the way you know it..."

Well, I'd hope it would go without saying that a number of MST films are very good in their own right (I'd immediately put up Phase IV, Danger Diabolik, Squirm [basically a lost Joe Dante], Ulmer's The Amazing Transparent Man, and -- if you count it -- This Island Earth) and a great deal more are interesting and idiosyncratic enough in their 'badness' to thrive outside the format.

I would also say pretty much all the Russo-Finnish movies they did, Gorgo, at least a couple of the Gameras, and Parts: The Clonus Horror are at least fairly good movies in their own right. And yeah, I'd be excited too see a cleaned up print of Manos with or without the Bots, but it is a shame that we're pretty much stuck with whatever crappy print of the movies they originally had at BBI for all the actual episodes.

Re: Mystery Science Theater 3000
For my money, it's part of the charm. For example, the moment when Buz appears out of nowhere in the diner booth in the MST3K print is fixed for the DVD release of Girl in Gold Boots, and I get sad every time I watch that scene on the standard DVD knowing that it's not coming.

Re: Mystery Science Theater 3000
Those Manos frames look incredible. Considering how bad the movie is, the clarity won't fix the story. I also hope sometime in the future soon Universal would let them use their episodes like "The Leech Woman" (film itself is actually pretty good, the MST3K episode was hilarious!), and "The Mole People". Like a "MST3K VS Universal-International" boxset would be gold.

Vol XXIII announced.
King Dinosaur
The Castle of Fu Manchu
Code Name: Diamond Head
Last of the Wild Horses
I'm excited about Fu Manchu, the DAP version floating around was really terrible picture quality so this will essentially be a first viewing for me.

I'm most excited for "King Dinosaur", I was giving up hope for a while since VCI has the rights for the DVD via Kit Parker Films, but Shout! has been great at licensing and got this superbad movie in. Very nice. (hopefully Universal in the future as I've said before)

Re: TV on DVD
Believe it or not, the UK is getting its MST3K debut release, and in Hi-Def no less!
Here's to hoping that there will be actual extras on this 'Humdinger Edition', especially "This Island Earth" in HD? One can hope.
