I oversaw that booklet, and I massively over-delivered on expected word count (I wasn’t expecting to find as many juicy production stories and contemporary interviews). One of the essays was also double the requested length, which pushed the word count up even more.

In fact, I suggested to Arrow that they might want to increase the page count (not logistically possible by then) or trim back some of the archival material, but in the end they went with the full text.

I ordered last minute copies of this from both Deep Discount and DVD Planet (who of course subsequently canceled them) but they each just emailed me $20 coupons as consolation!

Yup! I can work from home taking surveys on my sleep quality, and local single moms want to meet me, but nothing from DD

The code is unique, maybe it's manually being sent out? In other news, my UK copy arrived from Amazon. For waiting six days I managed to only pay ~$8 after these two codes are factored in, so all in all it worked out quite well!

So far I've paid -$20 since I realized I didn't care about the book and I may as well wait for the non-LE :D

It's like a super win. Too bad I didn't try for DVDPlanet too.

Received it from Amazon UK this evening in record time — shipped 12/27 via i-parcel, delivered by UPS. Most shipments at other times of year via Royal Mail / USPS take at least a week, occasionally up to two. Getting it before the storm disrupts deliveries, sweeter still.

I ordered from Amazon US at $29.99 and talked to customer service to try to have the original pre-order price honored per their guarantee, but the customer service reps kept giving me the run around, calling it a price match (a different policy that Amazon no longer offers) and refused to honor it. I have seen other customers claiming to have had success getting a credit though so YMMV.

Is this really Wilder’s best work?

I'd say so, and quite handily, followed by Sabrina. Despite having seen all of his films, I'm not a huge fan, but those two and Irma la Douce and Kiss Me, Stupid several tiers down are about enough for me (and maybe Five Graves to Cairo). Others more inclined to Wilder's style will no doubt have more favs than that

I'd throw The Seven Year Itch and Ace in the Hole in there (though would take out Kiss Me, Stupid), but still would say The Apartment is head and shoulders above. Really one of the best films ever in terms at least of making the joys of cinema seem so effortless to present.

I like Wilder considerably more than Dom, and I'd still say this is his best work. I've only dipped into his best known/classic period stuff and the one I cared for the least by a mile was Some Like It Hot. Ace in the Hole and The Lost Weekend are wonderfully dark and pitch perfect noirs I'd recommend. But what makes The Apartment so damn good is the range of tones it strikes and how well it does so. There is unbelievable emotional darkness and riveting emotional highs, and it's all believable and pulled off with perfect performances.

It also came in second on our board members' recent All Time List, if that matters (it probably does not matter)

It’s also a Christmas and New Year film, so if you like your film watching seasonal at that time of year, then you’ll likely watch it multiple times.

Also true! I have been telling students for years that if you want to be a screenwriter, all you need to know can be learned from studying this and Stagecoach, so I obviously hold the film in the highest of esteem. Additionally, I think it's the best film ever to win Best Picture, and lord knows I've seen all of those and their competition!
