So he'd want his first/most predominant credit to be as co-director of a bad film? Assuming this winds up being bad? Sure, he's not a name now, but that would have been even more reason for him to want credit for his work on this were he proud of it

Re: Trailers for Upcoming Films
Wikipedia credits Aaron McCusker as playing Jim Hutton who was Mercury’s partner till his death, so it looks like that’s not left out of the film. Still, nothing about this looks appealing to me and I’m not much of a Queen fan.flyonthewall2983 wrote: ↑Wed May 16, 2018 4:13 pmThere's been loads of discussions and near-infighting on Twitter about how the film is purportedly hiding Freddie's queerness, and particularly white-washing the fact he died of AIDS by ending the film at their Live Aid performance. Bryan Fuller has been particularly outspoken about it since the trailer premiered online.

To be fair, I am not a Carpenters fan but I love Todd Haynes's Superstar. But Singer is not on the same level as Haynes, even if he gets to play with bigger budgets.

Hardly you run-of-the-mill biopic. I’m not a fan of the genre at the best of times but could be convinced if the movie is formally interesting, like Superstar, or if I like the artist/s and the music.hearthesilence wrote: ↑Wed Jun 13, 2018 3:27 pmTo be fair, I am not a Carpenters fan but I love Todd Haynes's Superstar. ...I do quite like The Carpenters though.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody (Bryan Singer, 2018)
There was zero chance anyone but Singer would get the director credit here—DGA rules prohibit multiple director credits on a single film without a special waiver, and Bohemian Rhapsody was clearly not going to get one, since this situation (director fired by studio and replaced mid-shoot) is exactly the sort of thing the rule was meant to discourage.

Right. Principal photography had clearly made it past the halfway point when Singer was booted, so I figured he'd retain his credit. The Fanciful Norwegian wrote: ↑Wed Jun 13, 2018 7:08 pmThere was zero chance anyone but Singer would get the director credit here—DGA rules prohibit multiple director credits on a single film without a special waiver, and Bohemian Rhapsody was clearly not going to get one, since this situation (director fired by studio and replaced mid-shoot) is exactly the sort of thing the rule was meant to discourage.
One notable exception to the DGA guidelines, which was clearly precipitated by very exception circumstances, is the shared credit Michael Apted and Curtis Hanson got on Chasing Mavericks.

Early impressions are floating in on this, and apparently Malek is the only thing that's good about it. Kyle Buchanan said it's a "glorified Wikipedia entry"

Yep, this is going nowhere, despite some positive but not effusive notices for Malek. Another spot free for Best Actor, which is surprisingly wide open this year

It can't help at all that the leads actually sing in A Star is Born, where here it's all Mercury's vocals.

I still can't imagine Malek not getting nominated, unless this is just totally ignored commercially.

Lip-syncing didn't hurt Cotillard when she played Édith Piaf.

That movie and performance had massive industry support for Cotillard. No evidence Hollywood royalty will stick its neck out for this

He's already been hired for the Red Sonja movie and just received a big payday. So I'm guessing the most recent accusation meant nothing to executives.

But we are talking about the same Academy that just kicked Polanski out even though not a single new negative thing had happened since they awarded him an Oscar. Unless this movie is undeniably brilliant, which so far not even its admirers think, it's easily ignored

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody (Bryan Singer, 2018)
Just going to put my flag in the ground and say I think Malek is definitely nominated for this. The filmmaker is much different from the actor(s) and technical categories, and I think he gets recognized. Happy to put a bet on it with Domino if this forum wants some pitiable mod stunt to take place, but I'd rather it just be a friendly declaration of disagreement
Oh, and for the record, I think Singer is perhaps the luckiest man in Hollywood and is definitely guilty of almost everything Kevin Spacey has been blacklisted for, and more. The documentary An Open Secret alone should have sent him packing.
But I won't continue on that line of discussion in this thread! Just want it clear that I am far from in the tank for the film itself.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody (Bryan Singer, 2018)
Queen are my least favourite band of all time so I'd be more than happy to see this flop, but given the praise for him I think a Bafta nod for Malek is pretty much a certainty and the crossover with Oscar voters could push him in. But regardless of Singer getting new work I think if this does look to have any traction heading in to the Oscars there'll be enough negative stories brought up to hurt the film.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody (Bryan Singer, 2018)
Just a honest opinion. I absolutely despise the band and hope the film flops so it gets no awards play. If it hits big at the Oscars I'll have to make myself see it to have an informed opinion. But despite my hopes I think Malek is going to get a Bafta nom at least. The film might well be decent but I know how much I'll loathe the soundtrack and what a huge part of the film it'll play. Is that really that outrageous an opinion?
