Re: Trailers for Upcoming Films
Has anyone ever looked less like Elton John than Egerton? That said, at least there appears to be some sense of style present in the film

Re: Rocketman (Dexter Fletcher, 2019)
When I first saw the title I thought this was a biopic for the Supreme Leader!

He's making a joke that Joel Edgerton looks even less like Elton John... I think!

Doesn't Mark Strong impersonate him in the last Kingsmen movie?domino harvey wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 5:07 pmHas anyone ever looked less like Elton John than Egerton?

As a huge fan of Elton John, mostly his most prolific period of 1969-1976, but hate biopics, this will be a test for me. I will probably bite the bullet and go see this. Elton has commented that nobody sounds as much like him as Edgarton.

I can't imagine what this would have been like with Tom Hardy, who was initially cast as Elton before production delays.
I'm expecting Bohemian Rhapsody levels of insight seeing as both Elton and his husband are credited producers, though at least the lead is singing in this one.

Oofff, yikes, Hardy as John. That’ll be like Samuel L Jackson as Michael Jackson.

Sounds more like a bug than a feature to me. The only thing that made BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY tolerable was that the music survived intact.Calvin wrote:...though at least the lead is singing in this one.

Expected to get an R rating, possibly refuting an earlier report from The Daily Mail that a nude scene might have been cut at Paramount's insistence.

Sad that a studio would get their pants into a twist over two men's posteriors and sadder still that the MPAA might give this film an R rating over THIS scene (when it doesn't even involve any fucking). Nobody would bat an eyelid over this image in, say, France, or indeed, many other parts of Europe.

I had the discussion 2 weeks ago with a US citizen who was surprised by how many French movies were containing boobs and naked butts, and even male full frontal, in family movies, and nobody cared.
And indeed.

Re: Rocketman (Dexter Fletcher, 2019)
Maybe Paramount would risk having yet another flop then face the harsh LGBTQ criticism about Bohemian RhapsodyAccording to executive producer Matthew Vaughn, John himself favors an all-out apparoach. “This film is going to make people’s jaws hit the ground,” previously told The Daily Mail. “Elton just said, ‘Tell it all. Go as R-rated as you need to.’ And we do just that, with his blessing. The flaws and the genius are all there.” Viewers will find out one way or another when Paramount releases “Rocketman” on May 31.

Re: Rocketman (Dexter Fletcher, 2019)
My point is that almost anything Paramount recently has flopped so hard they might be at the point thinking one more won't hurt them. Granted, it's all said tongue in cheek, but who knows.
That all said it's refreshing to hear that a subject in Elton's position would tell the filmmakers to 'tell it all'. Especially after Bohemian Rhapsody and more recently The Dirt, which from what I read somehow manages to have dumbed down the original source material.

Re: Rocketman (Dexter Fletcher, 2019)
So - I attempted to buy tickets for opening night and inadvertently purchased tickets for the night BEFORE opening. Not sure why I was able to buy tickets and see it before it "opened" but I did - theater was almost empty so apparently not many people knew about the early screening.
That said, I can report it's pretty good. Sort of "8 1/2" crossed with the Baz Lehrman "Moulin Rouge" - but in a good way. Maybe not for everyone, but I quite liked it.
They tend to use snatches of songs and leave out bits not pertinent to the moment - but it works. The lead actor appears to be actually singing live for the mike - if he's lip--syncing he's doing it better than anyone ever. The performances are all good and it dares to be very unrealistic, almost surreal. Focuses entirely on Sir Elton's career pre-"Captain Fantastic" (the film almost seems a remake of that album, but without any of those songs). Apparently, Sir Elton recorded nothing whatsoever after 1978. And "The Lion King" and "Aida" and "Billy Elliot" do not exist. . . But in terms of shaping his life into a movie - that was probably a good decision. Three decades of pretty good work by a sober guy doesn't make a compelling story. . . but five years of work by a train-wreck does!
The screening said "This film is not yet rated" - which I found odd since it opens like TODAY! The "gay sex" scene seems pretty tame to me... maybe the heavy drug use kicks it over to the reported "R" rating it will have tonight? Or is the thought of heavy snogging between two guys enough to make the MPAA reach for the smelling salts?

Re: Rocketman (Dexter Fletcher, 2019)
I loved it. Taron Egerton was outstanding. The way the story is framed, which I'm not going to give away, is a bold choice for a movie approved by the real life figure. The musical sequences work including one that's pure movie magic. One of my favorite movies this year.
Lastly, the thing that's completely unfair is Bohemian Rhapsody was so terrible yet they threw a bunch of awards at it when this is 1000x that movie and unlikely to see the same praise.

I heard it received a standing ovation at a screening for some influential Oscar voters
