Really no clue what the tone is going to be from this. I was kinda enjoying the uber-serious take on Santa from Gibson and thought that could be promising— take an absurd idea and make it stranger by normalizing it. But then we get some little Wall Street kid in a suit doing the cliched to the heavens fist-shaking and it’s like, “Oh, this movie’s just gonna be weird in a really boring way, isn’t it?”

Everyone should just hope Alain Chabat’s recent spin on Santa, Santa & Cie., returns to Amazon Prime in time for seasonal watching instead. I feel confident Chabat’s inspired take on the character is under no threat of being overshadowed by Gibson here

I haven't seen any of the Nelms brothers other work, so perhaps those who have can give a better indication of their skills applied to weird dark comedy, but the trailer really overstays its welcome after a promising start. It's tough to parse out whether it's being sold as a cushier 'safe' version of a bizarre premise because that's what it is, or because it's actually bananas and doesn't make a lick of sense if portrayed with its (un)natural tone

I actually really enjoyed this - Gibson is at times maybe a little too gruff, but the throughline for his character makes me want a franchise if I’m being honest. Goggins is interesting as always and several line-readings got big laughs. There’s some Leone aping towards the end and I wish they leaned into it a little more - it’s surprisingly lacking in violence until towards the end for the most part.

I would love to see other character actor-types go against Gibson’s Chris Cringle - Frank Grillo would be good, but so would someone like Keanu or Nic Cage.
