I'm sorry to say that I'm not excited about the new movie. No one can ever top Ricki Lake, Divine and John Waters. Yes, I'm proud to call myself the world's last fan of the old Hairspray. Its charm is so peculiar that it's impossible to imitate or translate.

I'm sure many people have topped them.

Don't you wish you're one of them?

Not in the context of the original Hairspray

Oh, miless. Perhaps a primer is in order.

The trailer looks unforgivably bad, although John Travolta playing Divine's part might be the casting call of the millennium for sheer weirdness alone.

Don't forget John Travolta here.

This film has absolutely no right to be as good as it is: Directed by Adam Shankman who up until this movie is a poor man's Shawn Levy and it's a film version of the Broadway musical based on a cult classic by John Waters no less. Though this definitely isn't as great as the original (John Travolta is not 'Divine'), it's still a pretty damn good musical. So much fun. It helps that newcomer Nikki Blonsky is every bit as charming and infectious as Ricki Lake and a better singer than Marissa Jaret Winokur.
