Universal Pictures has acquired domestic and some international rights to the film, which begins shooting March 17 in L.A.

U Pictures chairman Marc Shmuger and co-chairman David Linde made the deal with Ghost House Pictures partners Raimi and Rob Tapert.

The film's described as a morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse. Pic marks a genre return for Raimi after directing a trio of "Spider-Man" films.

"Sam Raimi's return to horror is a cause for celebration," said Shmuger and Linde. "Having Ellen Page onboard to star is an abundance of riches."

In addition to North America, U will distribute in Germany, Spain and Latin America. Mandate International will handle all other overseas territories.

Pic was scripted by Sam and Ivan Raimi, and Tapert will produce with Grant Curtis and Josh Donen. Mandate's Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake will exec produce.

The film will be next for Page, who is also attached to star in "Whip It," the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore.

Donna Langley and Lawrence Grey will oversee the production for Universal.

I really hope the studio lets Raimi go for an R-rating rather than boxing him into PG-13. But given Ghost House's track record (The Grudge, Boogeyman, The Messengers) and Page's popularity with the younger set, this scenario unfortunately seems likely.

Damn it, with that title my mind could roam free. But now that I know that there is roller derby involved, my wandering mind has been stopped in it's tracks.

I dunno, both Raimi and Barrymore's films seem equally mediocre to me. Raimi hasn't done anything of value since A Simple Plan --- that was ten years ago --- and it was followed by a prompt slide into blockbuster hackdom and producing third rate horror films.

If I had to choose between Ellen Page in a horror movie or Ellen Page roller derbying I'd go with the derby on the chance I get to see her in those short shorts.

That's kinda horrible but it's true. Well, that and I don't much like Sam Raimi anyway except for Spiderman 2.

Perhaps, but Barrymore's quality level (as predictable and mediocre as it is) has at least remained somewhat consistent. I can't remember the last director who tumbled so disappointingly as Raimi has.

Seriously though, both of the films look like potential money makers, but Barrymore's film sounds more suited to her already established Juno audience.

You know, I don't really care if it's Ellen Page screaming her head off or some other nineteen year-old actress screaming her head off. Case in point: I have very little doubt in my mind that this movie will be bad. Raimi could not make another movie like Evil Dead today. It would just not be possible.

I haven't been very interested in Sam Raimi since early high school, but man, this sounds like a lot of fun!
