Le Voleur (Louis Malle, 1967)

#1 Post by FerdinandGriffon » Thu Jan 29, 2009 8:13 am

It's terrible being in Paris. Every DVD store I walk past is a potential day waster, with hours flying by flipping feverishly through stacks of R2 discs, eyes bleeding from searching the fine print for English subtitles for the umpteenth time. Anyhow, I'm looking for opinions on this early Malle film that I spotted the other day, also known as The Thief of Paris. I like a few Malle films very much (Le Feu Follet, Les Amants), and have been bored to tears by others (Elevator to the Gallows), so I can't quite justify the purchase yet, but if it gets a few kind words here, I may give in to my Belmondo love and pick it up.

I saw it thirty years ago and thought it was one of Malle's more interesting projects. However on buying the DVD I found to my cost that it has no English titles. Unfortunately, my French isn't good enough to cope without them.

All the DVDs I've seen of it here list English subtitles. Is this a mistake, or are we talking about different releases?

It's out in UK from Optimum Feb 16.

I'm guessing the Optimum DVD never came out. I found this page for it at Find-DVD, but looking more closely it seems the available listings are for an MGM DVD with a different cover than the French MGM disc. And since all the listings say "usually available within a month," I'm thinking it doesn't exist. Is there still no DVD of this film other than the French one (which is also out of print, unless I'm mistaken)?

I own the Spanish MGM dvd. It's only for 6 euros. I didn't like very much the film indeed (like Viva Maria, I think they are too weak) and of course the MGM DVD it's WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES among others languages.
