I'll be at Cannes this year. My first time at a major film festival of this type. Hoping to see some great pictures.

I was in Austin for SXSW but the line-up of films was frankly pretty dismal. I barely attended anything. Apparently SXSW now is more focused on video games and "interactive" and discussion panels and so on.

I remember when it used to be a music festival before the movies horned in on it.

How does one attend Cannes anyway? It's not a festival for the public like TIFF or Sundance

Also, don't forget that article where Wells called Zhou Yun a frumpy chubster.

Are there any rumors yet of interesting films at Cannes?

If this list is any indication, it will be a stacked year.

There are public tickets available...to the festival screenings, but not to the film market screenings.

Not sure what you have in mind, but no one can buy a ticket to any screening at the official Cannes festival or market. And no festival tickets are "public".

For the fancy-dress evening premieres only -- those premieres constitute maybe 5% of the festival screenings, the others being the morning and afternoon press screenings of those same films, the Un certain regard screenings, the "day after" screenings, and other special screenings, admission to all of which is on the basis of various level of accreditation badges -- badged press and guests only, if accredited at a certain level, may request "tickets". These are free. But they can be given, not sold, to the eager youths who crowd outside the Palais begging for any "extras" the accredited gods may wish to bestow them.

Yeah you're right. I went once as an accredited intern, and I had pretty much free access to anything, and I was literally waiting tables during the day. It didn't seem such a big deal to get into the screenings. The bigger deal was getting invites to the the parties.

It's been recently confirmed that Martel's Zama is not ready at all. Dumont's Ma Loute is slated for a release around the same time, but seeing as Fremaux has previously rejected his films from main comp, he might be sidebar. Otherwise, the titles that most stand out to me are from Serra (!!), Puiu, Ade, Bonello and Bellocchio. Hoping, of course, that the likes of Guiraudie and Pedro Rodrigues can replicate their success. We'll know the lineup in a few weeks.

The 4 that pique my interest are Family Photos (Cristian Mungiu), Paterson (Jim Jarmusch), Personal Shopper (Olivier Assayas) and Unknown Girl (Dardenne brothers).

Yep. Elle Fanning is shaping up to be a major actress, and I loved her work in Low Down and Somewhere

Something that I would not have noted until recently is that the lead of Gaspar Noé's Love, Karl Glusman, is also going to appear in The Neon Demon.

I started watching LOVE the other night. The film literally starts off with a straight-up porno scene set to Erik Satie.... oh boy.

On paper at least, that's the strongest competition lineup I recall ever seeing.

We're going to get TWO films from Jarmusch in one year! How about that?

Dardennes, Mungiu, Park, Jarmusch, Nichols, Arnold. Pretty much all the comp films though.
