Recent Film Restorations

#1 Post by Cinephrenic » Mon Nov 23, 2015 8:57 pm

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for current film restoration news. I didn't find a thread dedicated on the subject. Please post news or links for current or ongoing restoration work on films here.

Great thread idea.

One of the most significant recent restorations has been new company Cinelicious' (which is affiliated with L.A. nonprofit theatre The Cinefamily/Silent Movie Theatre) work on Yamamoto Eichi's 1973 anime BELLADONNA OF SADNESS. This has been a truly Herculean effort to bring it back to its full-length glory, as the original negative was truncated, and the restoration team had to find a 35mm print in Europe to fill in the gaps.

They have future projects on the docket, including Robert Downey, Sr.'s GREASER'S PALACE (Robert Downey, Jr. and Paul Thomas Anderson are on the Cinefamily's board of directors, and they've been spearheading this)

Following on from The Firemen's Ball, Closely Observed Trains and All My Good Countrymen, the Czech Film Foundation seem to be working their way through the famous 1998 local critics' poll and are currently preparing:

Christian (Kristián, Martin Frič, 1939)
Distant Journey (Daleká cesta, Alfréd Radok, 1949)
Diamonds of the Night (Démanty noci, Jan Němec, 1964)
Lemonade Joe (Limonádový Joe, Oldřich Lipský, 1964)
Intimate Lighting (Intimní osvětlení, Ivan Passer, 1965)
The Shop on Main Street (Obchod na korze, Ján Kadár/Elmar Klos, 1965)
Coach to Vienna (Kočár do Vídně, Karel Kachyňa, 1966)
Daisies (Sedmikrásky , Věra Chytilová, 1966)
The Cremator (Spalovač mrtvol, Juraj Herz, 1968)
The Ear (Ucho, Karel Kachyňa, 1970)
Cutting It Short (Postřižiny, Jiří Menzel, 1981)
Stone Bridge (Kamenný most Tomáš Vorel, 1996)
plus Karel Zeman's first three features

TCM has recently announced it will be premiering a new restoration of the Marx Brothers' Horse Feathers during its 2016 Classic Film Festival. No idea how much of the heavily censored Thelma Todd boudoir scene will be recovered, but I'm hoping for a significant improvement as it's my favorite Marx film.

This is my most eagerly anticipated restoration since Marketa Lazarova. I hope somebody gives this a proper blu-ray release.

WTF with Sony and their's best Borzage??? the uncut Man's castle? That's U R G E NT

No idea about my country, with all the money politicians had stolen, I think there's no plans about any restoration.
Let's not talk about the awful VHS looking prints of Mexican and Argentinian films. Scorsese should pick up some :-"

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has been diligently preserving and restoring all of Penelope Spheeris' works, including
her UCLA student films and independently produced short works, including UNCLE TOM'S FAIRY TALES (which isn't screening due to disputes with star
Richard Pryor's estate).

Sony is debuting a new restoration of John Sayles' City of Hope in a few weeks at Sundance. I don't think this title even made it to dvd anywhere in the world....I could see Criterion releasing the resto.

In-depth articles about film restos available in the Journal of Film Preservation - read table of contents/issue here:
http://www.fiafnet.org/pages/Publicatio ... opjkiemb30" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The journal is sparsely published, and was formerly made available online quite a long time after physical publication. Now it seems the only alternatives are subscribing or buying single issues. Well worth trawling through contents of all issues, to find stories about Mario Bonnard´s I Promessi Sposi, Lang´s Niebelungen, Hitchcock silents, and lots more.

Toute la Mémoire du Monde festival of restored films, Cinemathéque Francaise, Feb. 6:
http://www.cinematheque.fr/cycle/toute-" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... e-268.html

La Belle Équipe w/ original ending - Fists in the Pocket - City of the Dead - Phantom Carriage, 2015 resto - more Stiller and Sjöström - Great Day in the Morning - more

Not all new restos, but an interesting rundown of what´s been done the last few years.
