I sent the link to my many Kubrick-loving friends. I look forward to their howls of pain.
It's certainly an example of how awful 95% of trailers are. The ad agencies putting these out can take a film that has substance, a unique point of view, or is challenging in any way, and sell it as pap to mall-based cinemas. When duped moviegoers come out of the film in question, saying it wasn't what they expected, and bad word-of-mouth ensues, it's yet another example of why something different has little chance at the box office.
I think the fake trailer, while funny and impressive on the surface, is absolutely a caution to movie patrons.
Having said that, the person who put it together should find it easy to find work editing Hollywood movies.
Or, *shudder*, political ads.
(I'm probably taking it too seriously - I swear I laughed when I first watched it, but upon reflection... well, see above.)

the trailer is from a contest sponsored by the ny association of independent creative editors.
here's a ny times article about the shining trailer and two more trailers from guys at the same ad agency.
here is a fourth entry and, supposedly, there's a forrest gump as creepy psychological thriller entry, but i (or the other people i know discussing this meme) have found it.

God, I love it. It's so amazing when the narrator says "Shining!" at the end! I must've watched this at least seven times so far. Talk about word of mouth, that NY Times article is insane, though I definitely want to share this with my friends. It's a shame I don't have fast internet access (yet), because I want to see them all. And, yeah, that Peter Gabriel music is hilarious. Very well edited trailer!

The Cabin Fever trailer is also very good!

I'm curious how that plays, since the music of Bartok, Penderecki and Ligeti is so integral to the rhythm of the film.Gordon McMurphy wrote:Outrageous! The Shining is fairly being monkey'd around with these days: there's a rescored (intense techno) and tightly edited version out there, which I haven't seen.
