Re: Identify This Movie
METROPOLITAN isn't set in the 1950s, but it fits pretty squarely with the rest of it.
Are they all rich kids? It could also be something like WELCOME TO GREENWICH VILLAGE.

Sounds a lot like Paul Mazursky's Next Stop, Greenwich Village, which was shot in the mid-70s, set in the 50s, and features an important party scene that sounds like what you're describing.

Re: Identify This Movie
A scene in last night's episode of The X-Files made me think of an image from a film or TV show that I can't place. I believe it is a man & woman having a conversation in a prison; the type of scene where the man is a prisoner & the woman is visiting him, they are speaking on a closed-circuit phone system, separated by a pane of glass. The man uses paranormal powers to shatter the glass so they can kiss before he gets dragged away by the guards.
Any ideas?

Re: Identify This Movie
Hi,
It's puzzling me. I cannot remember the name of the film or year, I'm afraid - so please if you can help at all....
I *think* it a UK film maybe from mid 60's to mid 70's; possibly a heist/caper/robbery genre.
All I can recall is that right at the end of the movie one of the main stars is captured to be brought to justice and while handcuffed to a policeman is taken to trial. On his way and while in the court buildings he is allowed to be briefly detached to pay a visit to the loo. In the toilet he sees on the back of the door some long black gowns and judges wigs; so he dons them as a disguise and exits back through the door thus fooling the detective/policeman waiting outside.
He quickly mingles with a crowd of similarly attired court officials thus thwarting the detective and making good his escape...!
I *think* he then makes his way to find a colleague who owns a mobile hot-dog/burger van or suchlike and the film ends with them taking the van onto a ferry to Europe?
Anyway - any help appreciated.

I think it's A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square. It's a long time since I've seen it, but that sounds like the ending.

Re: Identify This Movie
What movie, made For T.V. movie or T.V. show episode shows the following thing happening?
A woman, possibly blonde & wearing jeans, is at a parking lot when, in a fit of rage, she lifts up the rear of a car with her bare hands & then lets it drop. After that, she is still out of control at that parking lot & she winds up being arrested, possibly for disorderly conduct.
Although I am trying to find out what it happened in,I remember seeing it sometime in the 1990's.

Yes - I checked it out and you were spot on with that. :)
Would never have got it without your help.
Thank you very much indeed for your fast response.
AKA
The Big Scam
The Biggest Bank Robbery
The Mayfair Bank Caper
I could only vaguely remember the ending but now recollection much better after viewing the clips on youtube.
Best regards.

Re: Identify This Movie
Thinking of another movie with just a few vague recollections.
-60s movie, I think. In color
-Drama
-Two main characters, lovers of sorts holed up in an apartment for a large chunk of the movie. The guy is poor and kind of a bastard. I think the lady wants him to commit to her but he keeps her at a distance. He might have another lady or he might be lying to her about his finances.
-There may be a little domestic violence. Either he slaps her around or she attacks him at some point
-One or both of them drink lots of wine. That memory is very distinctive. They drink a lot and it's always wine, usually straight from the bottle.
-The guy often goes to a diner or coffee shop. Maybe to meet with people or do some hustling.
-There are some key sequences near the end involving the diner and pay phones. Like he's waiting for a call.
Hope I'm not combining several movies.

The two of them drinking lots of wine straight from the bottle has me thinking Barfly, which fits some of your other details, but is not consistent with all of them.

Re: Identify This Movie
There's a specific section of THE HUSTLER that kind of fits that description.

Re: Identify This Movie
Yep, The Hustler is definitely one I was thinking of. The drinking and apartment scences with domestic tension.
What do you want me to do, just sit here and wait, your faithful looking Sarah. Pull all the shades down and sit. When you feel like coming back, you'll come back and you'll love me, and then you'll go away again. Is that your idea of love?
Greatness. But there might be one more I'm thinking of with the diner and pay phones. Maybe another Newman flick...The Sting?

The Cincinnati Kid? It's a very long time since I saw it, but it's effectively The Hustler with Poker (and Steve McQueen).

That's it! Thanks.
Years ago I took a snapshot of the famous cigarette lighting scene and I couldn't quite remember the movie. I thought the actress was Gloria Grahame which led me down the wrong path.

Any idea what movie this is? I saw it at a museum in Moscow last year, but didn't have time to stick around and watch it too long. It appeared to be a comedy from the 70's.
