So a film that has never been released in its country of origin (say, because it is banned there) has no year of release and therefore doesn't exist? [/shitstirring]

I said "generally." Every film gets a year of release assigned to it! For instance, for A Touch of Sin I'm going with the first non-festival release somewhere in the world, which makes it a 2013 film.

Ooh, glad that Boyhood doesn't count as a 2013 release too. At least one film with a 2014 US release date will count on the 2014 consensus list! ;)

Not surprising, considering it never played anywhere until 2014.

If my system is ruining people's lives, I suppose I could change it so that films get assigned to years in the consensus list based on how a majority of people have categorized them in their personal top 10 lists.

I was just teasing, it's far from ruining my life. Although what you propose certainly sounds like a pretty good idea.

All right, for the past couple of years, I've gone back and reassigned films to the years where they show up on the most lists. See here. Now you will all have to think of something else to complain about.

First post updated. Note that Stranger by the Lake has now made the leap to the 2014 list, since its appearance on individual 2014 lists now outnumbers its appearance on 2013 lists.

The next update will be the year-end one, at which time I will be doing the following:

1. No longer counting 2014 lists of less than 10, and only partially counting lists of 10 that haven't been updated recently. If you haven't edited your list since at least the last Friday of October and you want it to count as is, then you will need to add a note to your post that indicates this. Lists that I stop counting at year-end can be counted again later if they're subsequently edited to constitute a qualifying top 10.

2. Deleting empty place-holder posts in the 2014 thread that haven't been updated all year. These people are free to contribute a list at some point in the future, but they will lose their spot earlier on in the thread.

3. "Freezing" the results for years 2013 and prior (i.e. any changes during 2015 will be shown as changes from that point in time). 2014 will be frozen at the end of February, after awards season is over.

P.S. I'll be doing the year-end update one week from today, instead of in the usual two weeks.

First post updated. This is silly, but in disqualifying lists that aren't top 10s for the year-end update, Stranger by the Lake lost enough votes to go back to being a 2013 film again. I won't be surprised though if it changes back to a 2014 film in the next update or two. Remember, THIS IS WHAT ALL OF YOU WANTED.

If you get anything out of the green/red statistics shown for 2013 and prior years, soak them in now (essentially, they represent the changes during all of 2014). At the next update in two weeks, they'll be tracking the change during 2015.

For what it's worth, I think for Dynamic Consensus Lists, you should go with a film's world premiere and add the 2014 votes for Stranger by the Lake to its 2013 tally. Same with Under The Skin, Only Lovers Left Alive etc and any 2014 pictures that have a theatrical release in their home country in 2015.

First post updated. Lots of activity these past two weeks, with about a dozen films new to the 2014 list.

I'm not sure if by "theatrical release" you're counting festival releases. When we first started doing this, I remember that The Hurt Locker, the Best Picture winner for 2009, had actually premiered at a festival in 2008, and so assigning films to individual years that way (essentially, based on the IMDb year) seemed wrong to a lot of people. As a compromise, I used to assign films to years here based on the first non-festival release in the film's home country. There were some issues though with this approach:

1. Some films (e.g. A Touch of Sin) may never play in their home country.
2. By the time a lot of people were seeing some of these films and adding them to their lists, the films were getting buried in the "Honorable Mentions" section for older years instead of placing prominently in the current year's list. It's hard for a new film to stand out in an old year where the competition has had far longer to reach critical mass. I remember this happening last year to Only Lovers Left Alive--when all the buzz was happening for that film in early 2014, it would have ranked in the top 3 for that year if I had been counting it that way, but instead it was stuck in a low position on the 2013 list.

People have lots of different ways that they assign films to years in the top 10 threads. Rather than choosing one of them for the master list, it seems in the spirit of the thread to let the release year be a dynamic thing itself, so that a film can switch to a newer year if it turns out that more people consider it to belong to that year.

Also, it took some work to change my tracking sheet to the way it is now, and I'd rather not go back!

P.S. Under the Skin's first non-festival release in its home country was in fact in 2014 (per IMDb).

In case this interests anyone, here would be the 2014 Best Picture nominees if the forum had chosen them (derived by subjecting the dynamic top 10 lists to the Academy's rules):

The Grand Budapest Hotel
Boyhood
Under the Skin
Birdman
Nightcrawler
Whiplash
Only Lovers Left Alive
Inherent Vice
We Are the Best!

In fairness, large parts of the world have not yet been able to see most of the films that could possibly be in contention. This is more of a representation of what has been widely distributed so far, with a couple of strong latecomers starting to climb.

I think anyone without an avatar with a cigarette in it should be banned from this forum en masse - everyone conform or else

EDIT: ha, I must be going blind - I thought TMDaines' avatar had a cigarette in it

Even the films I don't like on here are at least far more commendable/interesting than The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game.

Out of curiosity, for the consensus #1 film, are you checking to see if the lists are ranked? For instance, I always just throw mine up in a random order; are you just ignoring my list when tabulating the consensus #1?

Yes, I only count actual #1 votes.
