By the way, the previous trailers were both released on the 19th (May 19th [technically that following Monday since the 19th fell on a weekend] and June 19th). Something's telling me that we might get some sort of a treat every month on the 19th, and that after a week in NYC/LA, the film will get a nationwide expansion on October 19th. Just speculation on my part, but there seems to be a pattern here.

What is it that I'm looking at in that poster? An empty wine bottle floating in dirty water, or is it a message in a bottle?

It appears to be a wine or liquor bottle submerged in [salt?] water. There's a few things we can read into it: Freddie's alcoholism, a 'half empty/half full' type of theme, and the fact that part of the film is set on a Sea Org-style yacht. I'm sure it'll have tons more meaning when we see the film, much like the There Will Be Blood teaser poster:

I'm crossing my fingers that a handful of 70mm prints will be struck. The other 2012 film that was shot entirely in 65mm, Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson's SAMSARA, is going to be digital distribution only, unfortunately.

I wonder how many 70mm prints they will strike. From what I understand, there's only one lab in the world that can do it and it's extremely expensive.

We know that Weinstein has committed to at least one. Harvey Weinstein had said they would like to show it in 70mm at Toronto if a print could be prepared in time. David Poland just tweeted that it will "play TIFF in 70mm at the Princes of Wales theater in the first 4 days of the festival." I'm guessing that one will go to the Westwood Village in L.A. after the festival. Is it safe to assume that New York will get one too? I suppose it's possible that it might be an L.A. exclusive for a couple of months then tour to other cities after that.

There is a piece here by Ben Kenigsberg, where he wonders if Chicago will be able to show it. There is a list here of the theaters believed to be capable of 70mm prints. As far as I know, there have only been two 70mm engagements here in Denver in the 23 years I've lived here.

Following up on this article led me to finding out for the first time that Navy Pier's theater hasn't been 70mm-capable in over a decade, which is really, really sad. I remember seeing Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm on that screen - talk about epic! It spoiled a little bit the experience of watching that film any other way. I hope they can work something out with the Music Box (not that it does me any good now that I'm no longer there).

The UK release date is 9 November, which tells me that The Master is most likely to play the London Film Festival (10-21 October). So if a 70mm print reaches the UK, it will be shown there at least.

The last 70mm commercial release in London was the 2001 reissue in 2001, which was at the Curzon Mayfair. There are about half a dozen London cinemas which could and did show 70mm in the 80s and 90s. Some of them may well no longer be able to, but I suspect the big showcase cinemas in Leicester Square will still be equipped. NFT1 at the BFI Southbank can certainly show 70mm - I saw a new print of Ryan's Daughter there a couple of years ago. There's also the BFI IMAX which according to its promotional literature can show 5-perf 70mm as well as 35mm and 15/70 IMAX.

Outside London I don't know, though there are places like the Pictureville Cinema in Bradford which can show 70mm - it's also one only three public cinemas worldwide which can show three-strip Cinerama.

Though that list was purportedly last updated in December 2011, I can say that the Loews Pittsford 3 (Rochester), NY closed ten or more years ago.

They are not on the list, but while the Dryden at the Eastman House might seem like a venue capable of 70mm, apparently they are not. (They can run nitrate, however.)

It does sound like that list is probably a little out of date. They list a theater in Denver that supposedly has three screens capable of showing 70mm, and I don't recall that theater ever doing so. I suppose they might have shown Hamlet.

I saw 2001 in 70mm at the Esquire in 2002. That was the only time I've experienced the format. It was overwhelming and brought a whole new appreciation for the film. The Esquire hasn't shown anything in 70mm since then. I was very disappointed when they showed Lawrence there a few years ago in 35mm.

Yeah, I noticed that list includes the Broadway Theatre in Portland, which was demolished in 1988. So I'd say a great deal of its information is (sadly) unreliable.

That list has a "River Oaks" theater here in Chicago, and I have no idea what that is referring to. Maybe the AMC River East? But they went all-digital last year, I believe, and I'd be surprised if they're still 70mm capable (if they ever were, which seems quite doubtful).

Saw 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm at the Music Box too, and yes, the screen isn't very big. IMO, it actually undermines the experience a bit - it's certainly far from a special viewing at Radio City Hall. In both cases, I sat pretty close to the screen just to get a "good-sized" view. I think the leg space was narrower there, which made it a little uncomfortable, but the color and detail was absolutely amazing.
