Dynamic Top Tens of 2018

#24 Post by sir_luke » Mon Jan 01, 2018 4:17 pm

1. First Reformed (Schrader)

I first saw this film on an unusually frigid early-autumn day, in the midst of one of my life’s lowest moments, and the brute weight of its protagonist’s existential despair punched a hole through my chest. I have not been able to bring myself to see the film a second time, perhaps because I’m still wrestling with its fundamental question: “Will God forgive us for what we’ve done to His creation?”

2. Fraud (Fleischer-Camp)

In the ethically dubious FRAUD, director Dean Fleischer-Camp takes an anonymous family’s innocuous YouTube uploads and refashions them into an incredibly credible narrative about a family of fugitives and their escape from unhappiness. A truly remarkable feat in editing and experimental filmmaking, a flash-fiction-ish exploration of the banality of capitalism’s evil. An Apple Store product launch has never looked so sinister, or so tragic.

3. Vox Lux (Corbet)

VOX LUX is a film about which I knew practically nothing before walking into the theatre, which worked very much to this mysterious film’s advantage. It’s a cold and brutal meditation on celebrity and the extent to which popular culture is linked to sociological trends and global events, which features two vastly different but complementary interpretations of a single character — first, as a traumatized teenage phenomenon, by Raffey Cassidy; second, a fragile adult pop star, by Natalie Portman.

Also, the Oscars should institute a “Best Narration” award and should present Willem Dafoe with its first.

4. Let the Corpses Tan (Cattet, Forzani)

Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani have spent their career paying searingly clever homage to bygone genre films. The pair electrified the giallo in AMER and THE STRANGE COLOR OF YOUR BODY’S TEARS, and they return after a half-decade gap with their most formal effort. A paint-and-blood-splattered heist film that plays a little bit like if late-‘60s Godard made a spaghetti western, it’s operatic and puzzling. It’s 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, but it’s a dry heat.

5. The Favourite (Lanthimos)

Lanthimos’ most actor-driven film is a palatial power play in the spirit of THE DRAUGHTSMAN’S CONTRACT. Colman, Stone, and Weisz give three of the year’s best performances in the same film, by turns playful, conniving, vindictive, and vulnerable. A few unusual tricks, like the occasional employment of a queasy fisheye, only serve to underscore the fundamental volatility of the central intrarelationship.

6. Fatal Pulse (Packard)

Damon Packard is a reliably out-there underground artist, a filmmaker who breaks the rules of filmmaking as well as the rule of law in order to craft unforgettable hallucinogenic work. FATAL PULSE (aka NIGHT PULSE aka UNTITLED YUPPIE THRILLER) is alternately Bush-era political satire, surreal hostage horror, a scalding denouncement of Hollywood, and time-traveling conspiracy-mongering metafiction. It’s too much for one movie, and feels like too much, but you’re sucked into its void before you have time to care. Spielberg is dead; long live Damon Packard.

7. Les garçons sauvages (Mandico)

A half-technicolor psychosexual fugue that dispenses with the notions of gender roles, gender, and roles. A group of Wild Boys (played by an all-female cast), haunted by the evil spirit TREVOR, have their wanton ways forcibly corrected by a gruff sea captain, who brings them to a mystical island wherein they witness their attitudes and bodies rapidly changing. Darkly funny, often horrific, and never less than visually intoxicating.

8. Madeline’s Madeline (Decker)

Josephine Decker’s wonky tale of mental illness, intellectual growing pains, and artistic surrender stars chameleonic newcomer Helena Howard as the Madeline(s) of the film’s title, riding waves of emotion and navigating the rapids of creative self-discovery. The film follows her finding an internal rhythm and by the end we’re all choreographed into the dance.

9. The Other Side of the Wind (Welles)

The lore of Orson Welles’ final film’s creation and 40+ year languor has been very well-documented, so I won’t go into much detail here, but to summarize... Recently, Netflix ponied up enough cash to pry the mythical unfinished film from its rightsholders, and vowed to complete the barely edited collage with the assistance of Bob Murowski and the guidance of Welles’ detailed notes. The result is fascinating and exhausting, though it’s impossible to know if it at all resembles what might have been had Welles completed the film before his death. As it exists, though, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND is a fitting and poignant capstone to a tumultuous artistic legacy.

10. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Coen, Coen)

An anthology set in the conspicuously cinematic Old West, a collection of tales of grief and euphoria, sometimes told in earnest and other times dripping with sly irony. All segments have their strengths, but I’ll single out the titular story — starring Tim Blake Nelson as a crooning live-action cartoon character — and “All Gold Canyon” — the most rapturously beautiful passage, featuring Tom Waits as a prospector in the autumn of his life — as my favorites.

THE RUNNERS-UP

11. The House That Jack Built (Von Trier)

A victim (albeit a willing one, perhaps) of a drastically misleading advertising campaign, Lars Von Trier’s latest challenge is part serial killer serial, part provocation, part video essay, part autobiographical self-flagellation. Lars contends with his cratered reputation and confronts his many demons, and to properly do so requires that we venture with him into Hell itself. A massively mischaracterized masterpiece.

12. Sorry to Bother You (Riley)

The Coup frontman Boots Riley directs this tale of “profit over people” with an absurdist flair, a boldly political and righteously angry comedy that has the gall to ask, “Who are we working for and why?” It juggles so many ideas that not all of it fully works, but with such imaginative satire and such a ruthlessly critical voice of the de-humanity inherent in corporate culture, it’s a wonder it received a wide release at all.

13. Everything is Terrible! Presents: The Great Satan (Beidelschies, Maier, Simakis)

An unmitigated masterpiece of psychotronic clip-cobbling, THE GREAT SATAN is the latest feature project by the found footage deities of art collective Everything Is Terrible! (who also brought us an all-dog remake of THE HOLY MOUNTAIN and plans to build a pyramid of used JERRY MAGUIRE tapes). Church sermons, PSAs, puppet shows, direct-to-VHS horror movies, and other oddities are chopped and screwed to poke fun at the underlying absurdity of Satanic Panic. Absolutely the funniest film of the year.

14. Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc (Dumont)

Dabbing to defeat a dangerous dogma. This talky, mostly child-led, heavy-metal interpretation of Charles Peguy’s “Les mysteres de la charite de Jeanne d’Arc” is, perhaps unsurprisingly, a deeply weird and potentially alienating experience. It’s also as rawly passionate as any film I’ve seen this year, brimming with a genuine gut-set fervor for the cause of ”killing war.” I’ll headbang to that.

15. Mandy (Cosmatos)

In a negative review, one Letterboxd user described MANDY as “the cinematic equivalent of an ironic wolf t-shirt,” and while he employed the comparison to derogate the film, it also serves as a concise explanation of why I enjoyed it so much. Every frame of this film is saturated with hazy neon, and Cosmatos directs like he’s trying to find his way out of an ayahuasca-induced nightmare. The film reaches histrionic highs (an animated acid trip! a chainsaw battle!), and it’s not without humor (Cage’s line deliveries are some of the weirdest he’s ever done), but most of all it’s indelibly upsetting. It also boasts the year’s best score, unfortunately Jóhann Jóhannsson’s last.

16. Annihilation (Garland)

ANNIHILATION is a horror movie about nature warping to accommodate the bend of humanity, not “taking on a life of its own” so much as attempting to reclaim the life it once had. It’s tentpole sci-fi with a brain and, much to my delight, seemingly a half-remake of Saul Bass’ 1974 masterpiece PHASE IV.

17. Unsane (Soderbergh)

Steven Soderbergh’s claustrophobic iPhone-shot paranoia thriller is sleazy in all the right ways, a throwback to the prime of pulp fiction. A scene towards the end of the film, set in a padded cell, is perhaps the acting triumph of the year — a disorienting melding of personalities, pitched at a supersonic level of intensity.

18. Eighth Grade (Burnham)

Living, shining proof — as if we needed it — that young people should be the ones to make movies about young people. Comedian Bo Burnham’s film has such a heart for its fearfully forward-forging protagonist and it’s so authentic in its examination of Gen Z anxieties (which are surprisingly universal despite their dependence on new social technology). It’s also the first of two films on this list to feature an excellently executed dab.

19. Self-Criticism of a Bourgeois Dog (Radlmaier)

A vigorous, youthful, visually entrancing satire that is always self-aware (and yes, self-critical) but never self-serious, poking fun at idealistic communist utopianism, idle intellectualism, and moral hypocrisy. And it features an adorable dog!

20. The Tale (Fox)

This autobiographical drama is documentarist Jennifer Fox’s first narrative film, but she nevertheless approaches the gut-wrenching material with a documentarist’s clear-eyed interrogative tone. The film is an inquisition into sexual abuse — not the violent, abrupt kind so often explored in cinema, but rather a manipulative, insidious slow-burn that leaves more questions than wounds — and Fox, through Dern’s sternly authentic performance, tries to find as many answers as she can. Elizabeth Debicki (a standout performer this year!) and Jason Ritter are quietly terrifying as Jennifer’s mentors/abusers, and Ellen Burstyn turns in a predictably remarkable performance as Jennifer’s mother, who is struggling to cope with her daughter’s dark revelations and trying desperately to understand how she can help.
