I wish I shared your belief in a much deserved nomination for Collette, domino, but A24 didn't seem to throw their weight behind Hereditary the way it looked like they might last year (or they did and just got no traction).

Cold War and Eighth Grade are equally plausible passion picks, but I doubt there will be room for more than one. There's always one left-field acting nom and Collette's a long shot but the Academy nominated her already for a horror movie almost two decades ago, so the impulse is there! I don't think A24 campaigned any of their movies this year

My predictions.

(I don't know anything about the shorts so I just picked the ones with the best odds)

I'm curious about Blunt. Enthusiasm for Mary Poppins seems to have faded as soon as it opened to just okay reviews and underwhelming box-office; her Best Supporting Actress SAG nomination for the ever popular A Quiet Place looks like a fluke. Still, she had a wonderful year and hit all the right precursors for the former movie. So I'm not sure why I get the feeling that a "surprise" nomination for Aparicio, Davis, or Pike remains possible.

I really hope Zion doesn't actually get in. That's definitely the worst of the shorts I've seen.

I almost plugged in Blunt over Foy in supporting, just because she seems widely liked and a possible beneficiary of a purely congratulatory "Hollywood likes you" nomination.

I had Blunt both in Lead and Supporting (for the same reasons you stated) until about a week ago. That seemed to be overkill, especially after the BAFTA snub. Left her in Lead and placed Foy instead in Supporting. Not sure if it was a good move, since First Man underperformed throughout the awards season.

Here's one last kick in the teeth before nominations are announced as Green Book wins the Producers Guild Award for Motion Picture.

Reverse Shot's 2018: Two Cents is full of off-beat gems, but my favorite has got to be "Most Instructively Named Director".

Already some snubs and surprise nominees in Editing, Score, and the Supporting Actor/Actress categories.

Hopefully Marine de Tavira’s nomination portends support for Aparicio as a lead actress.

Not that anyone else cares, but the animated short list is disappointing.

Some huge snubs and surprises this year-- every predictor said First Man would win for score and Roma for editing and neither were nominated ! First Best Director without Best Picture since Foxcatcher. Good for Schrader, though Hawke was robbed

Bohemian Rhapsody gets best picture but Cold War, Beale Street and First Man don't. At least Buster Scruggs got some love. And of course my favorite of 2018 gets left off - Burning...

Cooper getting snubbed for Best Director is legendary. Not sure if it will pull off an Argo now but worth watching

Good for Paul Schrader and Spike Lee, not thrilled that Bohemian Rhapsody is a Best Picture nominee while Cold War, First Man, and First Reformed are on the outside looking in.

Yeah, though maybe a half-dozen fewer “It is early and I am tired” jokes would have been fine.

At least we don’t live in a world where “Peter Farrelly, Oscar-nominated director” is a thing.

I have to see Black Panther now but am off the hook for Mary Poppins Returns.

It's on Netflix, so at least it won't cost anything.

I'm in the same boat with Bohemian Rhapsody, but only one film I'm dreading is better than usual for this yearly penance

This sounds nuts but it apparently is true: Marina de Tavira is only the second foreign-language nomination ever in Best Supporting Actress, the other being Valentina Cortese in La nuit américaine

I’ll see if AMC rolls it back out theatrically next week.

For some reason, I thought you were dreading Green Book even more severely.
