86 There's Always Tomorrow
There's Always Tomorrow
Between his twin masterpieces All That Heaven Allows and Written on the Wind, Douglas Sirk created this razor-sharp study of male crisis, both a glittering testament to love's labours lost and his most unforgiving vision of suburban conformity.
Disregarded and neglected by his family, executive toy manufacturer Clifford Groves (Fred MacMurray) is unexpectedly reunited with his former co-worker Norma Miller (Barbara Stanwyck). As the old friends catch up on lost time, his children's suspicions and hostility to the new relationship threaten to push their father away permanently and throw into disarray the lives of all concerned.
With crystalline, noir-tinged cinematography from Russell Metty (Touch of Evil) and heartbreaking performances by Stanwyck and MacMurray, reunited 12 years after Double Indemnity in their final on-screen pairing, There's Always Tomorrow finds one of Hollywood's greatest dramatists at his finest. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present this little-seen classic in a new special edition.

The Blu-ray numbers are low, the DVD numbers high. It's DVD

Re: 86 There's Always Tomorrow
This was discussed earlier and it was noted to be DVD, since the original master isn't available and isn't high on the priority of the studio, so unless things have changed should be DVD. So rejoice or despair, hopefully more of the former rather than the latter as this is another Sirk to watchTribe wrote:Is this gonna be Blu ray only or DVD? I couldn't tell from any of the specs.
Edit: Found the old message on the twitbook topic for MoC.

Re: 86 There's Always Tomorrow
Probably just means the existing master is good enough for DVD but doesn't make the cut for Blu-ray (which is what was asked as to why it wasn't on Blu), I wouldn't worry about the MoC transfer quality given their releases and even more so considering that there is the Carlotta release which looked quite good, which you can check out at DVDbeaver, (and most likely same or similar source for MoC).jaredsap wrote:Mr Finch wrote:Specs announced:

Does the Carlotta edition include the earlier film version as well?

No, was there an earlier version, or are you thinking of "Magnificent Obsession"?Jack Phillips wrote:Does the Carlotta edition include the earlier film version as well?

Re: 86 There's Always Tomorrow
I didn't know it was based on Stahl's "When Tomorrow Comes", but, anyhow, although the Carlotta is a two disc affair ther's no other film on it.
To answer Willoneil, with "There's Always Tomorrow", there's also "Magnificent Obsession" and "Imitation of Life", so that's at least three. Maybe somone knows more.

Re: 86 There's Always Tomorrow
Here what is on the 2nd disc from the Carlotta release :

Re: 86 There's Always Tomorrow
Interlude is a remake of Stahl's When Tomorrow Comes an it's included on Interlude disc.
There's Always Tomorrow is a remake of Edward Sloman's There's Always Tomorrow (1934) and that film is not on DVD.

I wouldn't mind if you delayed this disc for a few months (or a year even) if you could snag the Carlotta extras, Nick.

Re: 86 There's Always Tomorrow
We couldn't make the figures work. We went for the DAYS WITH SIRK documentary instead (and had that subtitled), when we were facing "zero extras" in the face.
This title will, unfortunately, only sell hundreds of copies and we've pushed the boat out by including the documentary and doing SDH on the feature.

I'm quite happy just to have the film with SDH, good for MoC.
I suppose Sirk's film should have been called "There's Always 2morrow".

Re: 86 There's Always Tomorrow
This could be one of the best DVDs of 2010: the image looks wonderful and I'm looking forward to seeing the film for the first time (placed my preorder with Amazon yesterday). Coincidentally, I watched another Stanwyck-Murray pairing (Leisen's Remember The Night) yesterday and it left me hungry for more.

Re: 86 There's Always Tomorrow
Watched the film and read the booklet last night and expectedly it's another winner from MoC: Andrew Klevans' analysis of the first two scenes is an excellent read and deepened my appreciation for the film which I loved. As good as Stanwyck and MacMurray are in the Leisen and the Wilder, I think this is possibly their subtlest and most moving performances together. Especially liked the moment in Clifford's office when Norma says that for a while time stood still, or when she turns sharply at his remark that her visit is the most pleasant surprise he has had in years.
Also wanted to mention the beautiful packaging, with great stills on the inside cover, the menu and booklet. Thanks MoC =D>

I was positively surprised to read a recommendation of this MoC DVD in the Austrian newspaper "Der Standard". =D>
It's rare to see Austrian media promoting imported home video products.
