LOVE this possibility!!!! Been dreaming of it for some time. =D>DeusEx wrote:During the screening yesterday of The Emigrants and The New Land at The Rafael, the programmer mentioned that, according to Jan Troell, Criterion have been trying to acquire those two films. At best they're probably more than a year away, so take this for what it's worth.

"Educated" guesses. Quite often films that screen at the Cleveland Cinematheque arrive on Criterion blu-ray within 6 months. Coincidentally, The Red Shoes and Bicycle Thieves show next month. The same has been the case for Marienbad, Montes, 8 1/2, Revanche, Days of Heaven, etc.TMDaines wrote:Guesses or inside knowledge?ShellOilJunior wrote:My June picks:

I may be wrong but I hope I'm right as it would be a terrific June, in my opinion. 8-)

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
I can't see them putting out that many re-releases in one month, and in line with a pretty accurate list another member posted, I expect something like Night Train to Munich, The Red Shoes, Red Desert and Secret of the Grain. Also, they're putting a lot of work into their Kurosawa celebration, so I'd be surprised if we didn't see some kind of announcement, like a Rashomon Blu or Eclipse set. May be wishful thinking...
Would love for you to be right about Bicycle Thieves.

Please, no more Kurosawa for at least another 6 months.

I love Kurosawa, but got to admit that Criterion has a big hard-on for him.

I'd imagine Leon Morin (Melville) will eventually see a release-- maybe later in the year or early next year. I saw a terrific Rialto print of it last year and enjoyed the film a lot. Belmondo and Riva are outstanding together. Loved seeing Belmondo in an atypical role.
I can't remember seeing it mentioned on these boards so I thought I'd share that bit of information.

Argh! Have you ever seen any watchable "Madadayo"-disc outside the Ak100-set? This is my most desired CC title for this year for sure, even if I wouldn't mind an Eclipse set with those unreleased early films either.HelenLawson wrote:Please, no more Kurosawa for at least another 6 months.

Isn't Leon Morin controlled by StudioCanal? That makes a Criterion release a lot to hope for.ShellOilJunior wrote:I'd imagine Leon Morin (Melville) will eventually see a release-- maybe later in the year or early next year. I hope to God Studio Canal doesn't own this one. It already pains me that they own some Melvilles

The BFI issue of Leon Morin has a Studio Canal logo on the back cover.ShellOilJunior wrote:Can someone confirm/deny this?Brian C wrote:Isn't Leon Morin controlled by StudioCanal? Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Studio Canal definitely own "Leon Morin". It's in their Melville box set, and the disc and extras are identical to the BFI.
There's probably no chance of any more Melville from Criterion in the near future, because, aside from the ones they have already released, the rest are owned by Studio Canal.
Why worry anyway? The SC Melville's are all good transfers with plenty of extras, featuring commentaries by the excellent Ginette Vincendeau.

I asked specifically about Leon Morin and Mulvaney said no dice. This was about 6 months ago. There wasn't even a "keeps your fingers crossed" or anything like that.tojoed wrote:Studio Canal definitely own "Leon Morin". Seconded. The whole Criterion-Studio Canal upheaval on this forum (see thread StudioCanal Snatches It All Away) is very 'emotional attached'.tojoed wrote:Why worry anyway? The SC Melville's are all good transfers with plenty of extras, featuring commentaries by the excellent Ginette Vincendeau.
