Try stretching the dvd image to match the same size as the BD caps and you'll see a difference!
I think it looks great.

Aye, but it's very very minimal! Oh, anyway, the DVD was superb, so the improvement is not so noticeable.

Maybe you're joking, but that's not interlacing, it's an optical effect.

Many thanks, Rowan! This appears to be much better than I feared.

Sorry, I've seen it only once, I can recall nothing! I'm glad it's only an effect.

Dan, I thought you were kidding! Yes it's film effect. If it was interlacing, it would be the worst example of it EVER :D

I posted some impressions in the Studio Canal thread. In motion, especially on the projector, the blu makes all the difference - isn't that what the format is really about?

Point is, this isn't the disaster it could've been and many feared (see HDDVD).

India Song by Marguerite Duras. Scandinavian DVD from Atlantic Film, 2010. PAL format; most likely region 2; French audio; optional subtitles in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish; no special features. Looks open-matte to me.

I've used Totem Movie Player in Ubuntu to take these captures, and I have no idea if that program is actually any good. I'm fairly sure I've never changed any of its settings, for what it's worth.

Might as well do this too while I'm at it...

Taking Off by Milos Forman. Scandinavian DVD from Studio S Entertainment, 2010. PAL format, anamorphic; most likely region 2; English audio; optional subtitles in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish; no significant special features.

Seems comparable imagewise with the French subbed Carlotta CAMELIE (in their MA set with RED DESERT & CRONACA DI UN AMORE)...

Mr Bongo's El Bruto, with framegrabs chosen to match the ones in this Beaver review of the Facets edition. I haven't seen that in motion, but it's obvious just from the framegrabs that Mr Bongo's edition is significantly better, with a brighter, clearer picture offering more detail.

The print source was clearly the same, as the damage is identical (though the four-way tramline is thankfully brief) - but, as the last grab reveals, the interlacing present on the Facets is not an issue here: it's a progressive transfer that appears to be native PAL (it's three minutes shorter than the Facets, which one would expect as a by-product of PAL speedup).

In a nutshell, far from perfect, but very watchable (it looks better in motion than the screencaps suggest), and I doubt there'll be a superior edition along any time soon.
