Re: Czech DVDs
I did, and I'm still waiting. Feel kinda guilty for recommending them, but in my (limited) experience they have been the best to order from. Sorry. If they haven't shipped by their new expected ship date (aka next week) I'll harass them with google translate.

Nice to know that i'm not alone. The other fils i bought got to me very fast and easy, but it's annoying that the restock date changes all the time for marketa...

Re: Czech DVDs
In my experience, DVDBest is great if the discs are actually in stock, but you have to wait ages otherwise. I tend to order Slovak films in batches of ten or so at a time, and one or two always end up holding things up.

Re: Czech DVDs
I'm hoping Marketa Lazarova comes back in stock somewhere soon - I really need to order this. I made the mistake of waiting on the Russian Andrei Rublev Blu-ray, and since it initially went out of stock it has been pretty hard to find.

Re: Czech DVDs
Can anyone tell me if there is a DVD release of Thirty Maidens and Pythagoras (30 panen a Pythagoras), dir. Pavel Hobl, 1977.
"A musical starring Jiří Menzel (whose part is sung by Achilles Michailidis) as a Maths and Physics teacher employing innovative teaching methods. Instead of concentrating on learning, grammar school students dream about pop stars. However, the newly arriving professor Ludolf refuses to tolerate their ignorance and insists that they understand the subject matter. When the girls start to do various things to spite him, he gets an idea how to turn his lessons into an attractive show – he starts to sing the boring theorems to them…"

Re: Czech DVDs
To anyone who got their Marketa Lazarova Blu-Ray from gorilla.sk, how long did it take to arrive? I ordered mine on 20 February, shipping to Scotland.

Re: Czech DVDs
Grrr. My Marketa still has yet to ship. I did check with them, and all I got was a "we expect to ship on this date". They then changed the date again.

Re: Czech DVDs
Not sure if anyone's seen this but the NFA designed a new poster for the rerelease of Marketa Lazarova and it's rather pretty. It would have made a nice BD cover.

Re: Czech DVDs
Don't like it much, I'm afraid - too self-consciously arty, and gives less of an idea of the film than the actual cover (though I agree that that isn't exactly a design classic either).

Re: Czech DVDs
I thought that the poster gave a better idea of the dream-like (almost supernatural) feel of the film. The BD cover seems like it could be along the lines of Joan of Arc or something like that.

I emailed the National Film Archive regarding any future Blu-Ray releases and they informed me that Filmexport Home Video are preparing Lemonade Joe while the NFA themselves are restoring and releasing The Fireman's Ball in a "similar way and quality" as Marketa Lazarova.

Got my copy today; would appear that Gorilla took more than 10 week days to ready the item for shipping.

Re: Czech DVDs
I ordered Marketa Lazarova from Gorila.sk and had good luck. They shipped the day after I ordered, and it arrived in Boston, Massachusetts 15 days later. Plus, they sent it registered mail, which meant that only my hot little hands could receive it. It was also extremely well packed for its long journey. The film--a favorite of mine since seeing the Second Run edition--looks and sounds fabulous.
