Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Emma Stone, et. al. in Gangster Squad. Great cast of course, and who doesn't love a Warner gangster picture, but what's with the completely incongruous music?

Haven't you seen the trailer for Wettest County in the W... excuse me, Lawless? Advertising departments aren't even trying to be period-accurate anymore.

It looks pretty good, although I suspect I've just seen all the key moments. We'll see if Ruben Fleischer has it in him.

Yes it looks awesome but what the fuck are those hip hop sounds doing in the trailer?

They could have at least gotten a West Coast rapper to do it.

They should have used original rapper like Andre Williams.

Hm... some evidence to back up the rumors of this being a pretty awful film.

Solondz is one of my favorite working directors so he gets the benefit of the doubt from me for now... but yeah, this looks like a horribly generic version of an Apatow-style comedy to me. It could just be that the trailer is horrible, with all the hallmarks of awful music stop/starting to punctuate really awkward jokes. Ugh.

Funnily, to me this vaguely resembles the film I've always understood his disowned Fear, Anxiety and Depression to be...

Trailer released for Michel Gondry's The We and the I. The film debuts at Cannes tomorrow. Hopefully the reviews indicate that the film has more to offer than what's on display in the trailer because this looks awful. Reminds me of a bad afterschool special peppered with some f-bombs.

"Patronizing!" raves James Rocchi.

Gondry's defenders will, of course, point to the excellent "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," but the passage of years has made it abundantly clear that the credit for that film is entirely screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's; Gondry may have gotten out of the way of that script, but that's hardly a reason to celebrate his skills or capablities, such as they are, beyond that.

Oh puh-lease. That film is brimming with in-camera effects and visual mastery that no amount of writing can accomplish - Gondry is (or at least was at that point) an extremely talented technical director.

In a similar vein, the passage of years has made it abundantly clear that the credit for The Godfather is entirely Mario Puzo's; Coppola may have gotten out of the way of that novel, but that's hardly a reason to celebreate his skills or capabilities, such as they are, beyond that.

Directing a Charlie Kaufman film must be thankless work, man. Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry worked the hell out of that material to get the most out of it that they possibly could, and took their respective films to new levels. I'd like to see Brett Ratner direct Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind from the same script and see what comes out. James Rocchi may have disliked this new film, but what he had to say about Gondry is downright dopey.

I'm pretty sure the engraving of Mr. Murray's name on the Oscar is done already.

I don't know. Stiff competition this year from Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln, Phillip Seymour Hoffman in The Master, and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby. I'm sure there will be some feeling that Murray is "due" whether the performance is great or not though.

Scott McGehee and David Siegel have a new film, What Maisie Knew. The gauzy trailer made me wonder if I had the beginnings of glaucoma.

He might not even get nominated, this year is going to be stacked for male lead performances.

Jon Hawkes - Six Sessions
Christoper Plummer - Barrymore
Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe - Les Mis
Jaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman - Master
Daniel Day Lewis - Lincoln
James Gandolfini - Not Fade Away

Based on the Gatsby trailer I believe Dicaprio has virtually no chance.

Ahem, trailer for the Tom Hooper-directed Les Misérables.
Definitely capitalizing on popularity of "I Dreamed a Dream."

Perhaps, but I say he has a pretty good chance for a Supporting Actor nomination via Django Unchained.

Looks exactly like what I'd hope an adaptation of the musical for film would look like.

Branded looks very interesting, like a remake of They Live that may actually be worth seeing.

First teaser for Pixar's Monster University.

I don't know, it looks like everything is going downhill for Pixar. :-s
