I tried making it harder on myself this year by picking only films that have premiered this year no matter what region or festival, but I realized how difficult it was. These are either films that premiered at a festival this year, got distribution in Los Angeles this year or I saw a screener or something.

1. Computer Chess (I'll stand by and say this is my favorite American film in years)
2. A Touch of Sin
3. Leviathan
4. Drug War
5. Frances Ha
6. Upstream Color
7. The Place Beyond the Pines
8. Pain & Gain
9. Pacific Rim

Okay: The Dance of Reality, Phil Spector, Why Don't We Play in Hell?

Nope. I didn't like it: Blue is the Warmest Color, The Canyons, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Simon Killer, Spring Breakers, Stoker

God awful trash: Gravity, Post Tenebras Lux, To The Wonder, Wrong

1. Cloud Atlas
2. Zero Dark Thirty
3. Lincoln
4. Django Unchained

(NB: The first part of the year is bound to be dominated by titles that are technically 2012 but which didn't get their UK premieres until 2013 - Lincoln being an excellent case in point.)

EDIT: After revisiting Before Midnight at a Before... trilogy screening, I had to re-edit this list. It was my least favorite of the three, but I still had it in my list. Seeing it for the first time right after the other two made its shortcomings look all the more egregious - some promising ideas give way to a less-inspired direction that comes off as too prosaic and too narrow.

I wish I could put Lav Diaz's Norte, the End of History at #1 but going by U.S. theatrical distribution, I had to keep it on the 2014 list. That leaves Jacques Rivette's Le Post du Nord as the only narrative film that I'd call a masterpiece with an American theatrical release in 2013...and it was originally released overseas in 1981.

----

1. Le Pont du Nord
2. Museum Hours
3. Leviathan
4. The Last Time I Saw Macao
5. Beyond the Hills
6. At Berkeley
7. Like Someone In Love
8. Stories We Tell
9. 12 Years a Slave
10. Gravity [remarkable in IMAX 3D, but when viewed on something much smaller, its greatest strengths are robbed of its power - a real problem since that allows its undiminished flaws to take it down by quite a few notches]

I go by when it was possible to see the film in the metro Kansas City area - so films that had foreign, festival showings, etc in 2012 (or even earlier) are included if they were never released in the cinema here or didn't make it to the art house or on home video until 2013.

1. The Act of Killing - Truly speechless on this one. Just see it.
2. 12 Years A Slave - Steve McQueen finally hits it out of the park.
3. Maïna - Pre-Columbian First Nations epic w/ all Native cast set in northern Quebec - Absolutely gorgeous
4. Her - Joaquin Phoenix is perfectly vulnerable - Spike's best film.
5. Gravity - As intense a cinematic experience as I've ever had, an astounding achievement
6. The Gatekeepers - Most impressive historical documentary since Fog of War
7. Før Snøen Faller (Before Snowfall) - Gut wrenching realism and a glimpse into the Kurdish diaspora
8. Mud - astonishingly well made gothic noir coming of age thriller.
9. A Hijacking - Somali Pirates and Danish Capitalists care little for the lives of the men in the middle
10. Los últimos días (The Last Days) - in the year of the Apocalypse, this one rises above the fray

Enjoyed, but not top 10 material (in a rough order of preference, i.e. #11 on)....
Stories We Tell - Stunningly personal, profoundly moving, expertly crafted. Sarah Polley is a Filmmaker to watch
No - Brilliant use of the real campaign footage - utterly authentic in every way that Argo wasn't
Fruitvale Station - quite powerful
In A World - Lake Bell is a revelation....loved everything about this.
The Place Beyond the Pines - Act 1 is a masterpiece
The Conjuring - FINALLY, a clear runner up to The Exorcist
Kon-Tiki - Very well done without being melodramatic. Fascinated to see the non-U.S. cut.
Man of Steel - VERY surprised at how much I enjoyed this
Stoker - incredible atmosphere, great storytelling, and beautiful camera work/transitions
Suitcase of Love and Shame - A mesmerizing Avant Garde Documentary
Prisoners
The Kings of Summer
Ginger & Rosa
The Reluctant Fundamentalist
Side Effects
The Company You Keep
This Is The End
The Evil Dead
The Iceman
Shadow Dancer
Our Nixon
Hitchcock
Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer - refreshingly austere cinéma vérité
World War Z - surprisingly engaging w/ just the right amount of action.
Cockneys vs. Zombies
Into the White
Dark Skies
The World's End
42
West of Memphis
Star Trek Into Darkness
The Way Way Back
We're the Millers
Antiviral

1. Gravity
2. Dallas Buyer's Club
3. Nebraska
4. Ginger & Rosa (Sally Potter) -- A British coming of age/family drama set in 1945 - 62. Elle Fanning is impressive with nice support from Annette Bening and Christina Hendricks. I've cheekily dubbed this a Terence Davies version of Margaret.
5. What Maisie Knew a well-structured film, nicely shot.
Enjoyed it, despite not really believing in any of the characters.
6. Inside Llewyn Davis
7. Blue Jasmine
8. Mud enjoyed the set-up and characters and atmosphere. But thought the finale was pretty weak.
9. Short Term 12
10. Cutie and the Boxer

Still have a number of films I need to get to: Muscle Shoals, Disconnect, The Sapphires, American Hustle, Her, Bastards (Clare Denis, 2013), The Past (Iran), and the backup singers doc, the lone Saudi Arabian film ...
