Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution starring screen legends Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, and Charles Laughton and Delbert Mann's Oscar winning Marty starring Ernest Borgnine are among a very large package of titles slated for release on Blu-ray and DVD in 2014 by Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Other titles to be released this Summer and later by KL Studio Classics are Martin Ritt's Paris Blues, starring Paul Newman, Sidney Poitier, Joanna Woodward, Louis Armstrong and Diahann Carroll; Ralph Nelson's Duel at Diablo, starring James Garner, Sidney Poitier, Bibi Andersson, Dennis Weaver, and Bill Travers; Sydney Pollack's The Scalphunters, starring Burt Lancaster, Telly Savalas, Shelley Winters, Ossie Davis and Dabney Coleman; just to name a few. Follow them on Twitter @KLStudioClassic

My old contact and good friend at Olive Films left his positions as Olive's head of acquisitions and now is the VP of Acquisitions at Kino Lorber and told me to mention these titles. They will announce the actual release dates for the first batch of releases very soon.
Sounds great! Looks like Kino has a deal with MGM from the looks of this; hopefully good things will come from this deal - despite the fact I was hoping that the Wilder would get the Criterion treatment.

Ah fuck, I had hoped for a long time this was going to Criterion. Not getting very good news today with R1 indie distributors (Twilight Time).

At least Kino clearly has a history of consistent excellence with everything they do, so these will of course be show-stopper blu-rays....

Meaning Frank Tarzi. Very interesting, and encouraging. If a bunch of those titles that were mastered in HD for the MGM cable channel could get Blu-rays, this could yield as many goodies as the Olive/Paramount deal. Kind of wish I hadn't just bought a bunch of those MGM MODs. (And, unlike some of the posters above, I'm glad these studio standbys won't be taking up slots on the Criterion slate.)

Always good to get more Hollywood classics on Blu-ray. This means that MGM now has sub-license deals with four different labels (Criterion, Shout Factory, Twilight Time, Kino).

Pretty good move for Kino, as they probably had little in the way of classic Hollywood/American films to distribute after going through the Selznick library and losing many others to Cohen.

Paris Blues finally getting an American release is great news. I don't expect much in the way of extras, but if by some miracle they could put together something on Duke Ellington I'd be happy.

KLStudioClassic just tweeted that they will be releasing The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes on blu-ray sometime this summer.

Nice! Lincoln Center's showing it later in the week in 35mm, but I may actually save my money and get the BD.

This is, of course, the greatest news ever. I suppose that Tarzi's departure from Olive signals the end of that organization's reign of awesomeness. I just hope that they still get around to releasing Fedora.

I get the feeling that the slow down in Olive releases of their remaining Paramount/Republic licensed titles is to stretch out the schedule since they aren't likely to get any more with Mr. Tarzi moving on to Kino. They're probably all set to go from a disc image standpoint.

Hopefully the Blu of Private Life of Sherlock Holmes will include, in HD, the deleted video and audio material included on the DVD.

If Kino delves into the MGM/UA catalog, one tantalizing idea is restoring The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968). The existing DVDs are not the full version. The R2 DVD is cut for animal cruelty (horse falls). The full version is/was available on a UK VHS from the BFI

So, is MGM doing alright, business wise? What is going on? Sabata is not a high profile film, so leasing it out makes sense, but why MARTY, WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION or THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES? I have never seen PARIS BLUES, hence I can't judge. DUEL AT DIABLO and THE SCALPHUNTERS are OK in my opinion, so I don't see MGM wasting their time and money on them. Also, if Marty was available to acquire, why did Criterion not get it?

Paris Blues was never released in R1, so MGM had never seen the appeal for it here (I saw it via R2 DVD, don't remember if it was MGM or not)

MGM is doing fine these days with its Bond and HOBBIT money. It's the DVD/BD market for catalog titles that isn't doing so great. This is like the dying days of laserdisc, when the studios stopped caring and let Image put out tons of catalog titles on LD.

Maybe Criterion simply never asked for MARTY. There are a few thousand titles in the MGM catalog; Criterion can't license them all.

I understand what you mean, but they seem eager to re-release already existing BDs! I guess, all possible in this Mad World :)

Kino: MGM Acquisitions

We have provided original documentation to Kino-Lorber and I have good news for cinephiles.

MARTY will be seen on Blu-ray in Delbert Mann's intended 1.85:1 compositions for the first time since the original theatrical release.

Wonder how long it will take for Jeff Wells to write another one of his "1.85 Fascism" articles.

It's ironic that he missed our 1.75:1 documentation for both SABRINA and A HARD DAY'S NIGHT!

It's like rai-ee-ain on your wedding day. He didn't miss any documentation, he's just an open-matte fanatic regardless of Lester's stated intentions, or he craves the attention, or both.

Am I the only person whose mind is in the gutter and think of certain types of theatres in Times Square when I read that Marty is "A picture to gratify all types of people in all kinds of theatres"?

Well, I don't know about 42nd street, but it did originally open at the beautiful Sutton on 57th.
