I'm still convinced that we'll be seeing it on Criterion here

Re: Joel and Ethan Coen
Yes, I bought this set for just £13.99 a few months ago. Barton Fink looks great, loads of grain and detail and a massive jump up from the subpar DVD release. Intolerable Cruelty is fine as far as I can remember and The Big Lebowski's DNR is well documented. However, with that film I was upgrading the 1998 DVD release so this was another huge jump. Also, watching on a 37" screen it looked good to my eyes.matrixschmatrix wrote:Has anyone bought this? I'm curious as to how Barton Fink and Intolerable Cruelty look, and whether the Big Lebowski release is as DNR'd as the R1.

The Coens-scripted Gambit, which came out in the UK several years ago, is finally showing up in the US... and going direct-to-DVD

You mean that it turned out to be one of their funniest movies? I agree, for the record.mfunk9786 wrote:This cast is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in a long while. Of course, I felt that way about Burn After Reading and look how that turned out

Though I haven't revisited it, I meant one of their very worst.

Like most Coen comedies, it improves tremendously on a second viewing.mfunk9786 wrote:Though I haven't revisited it, I meant one of their very worst.

See, I never had that problem. I loved a film like Raising Arizona right from the getgo.

Raising Arizona has the unfair advantage of actually being funny though

There was also O Brother, Where Art Thou? But I suppose that also counts in that category.domino harvey wrote:Raising Arizona has the unfair advantage of actually being funny though

Funny the first time: Raising Arizona
Funnier with each viewing: Lebowski, O Brother, Intolerable Cruelty, Burn After Reading
Never Funny: The Ladykillers

Damn, I'm in a tight spot, that spot being finding The Ladykillers pretty funny at times.

Re: Joel and Ethan Coen
Only Coen Brothers Comedies I'd bother to watch again: Raising Arizona and the Hudsucker Proxy (and add in No Country For Old Men and you can just say Coen Brothers Movies) (Haven't seen Intolerable Cruelty yet but have seen every other Coen Bros film) (Clearly it is really important that you know my opinions on this) (I know it is not) (I'm sure I'm sorry) (Sigur Ros 4ever)
Narrator: The only thing I remember liking about the Ladykillers was Tom Hanks' performance, so I'll give it some marginal praise there even if it was immediately countermanded by everyone else in the movie

I thought J.K. Simmons was pretty funny in it (hell, those embarrassing IBS jokes are saved by him trying to turn his condition into a teachable moment), but yes, Tom Hanks definitely stole the show.

Should add Hudsucker to that last list if we're treating opinions as objective. Hawks would shoot them in the head for Leigh's performance.Jeff wrote:Funny the first time: Raising Arizona

Jennifer Jason Leigh versus Howard Hawks is like the toughest call in history though. If it came up on one of those "Pick One" internet games, I'd just close the browser window

Re: Joel and Ethan Coen
Interesting interview with Ethan Coen and his wife and collaborator Tricia Cooke.
Apparently Ethan had (for a moment) left the movie business, focusing on other endeavors, when the COVID lockdown hit. He needed to find something to do, and just when he decided to go back to filmmaking, T-Bone Burnett approached him about making a documentary on Jerry Lee Lewis.

MacDonald would make a great source text for the Coens.
